If by "thigh kicks" you mean the target of the kick is the thigh.

I don't know about in other dojos, but Fuller sensei taught me very quickly to watch out for those after he continuosly nailed my rear leg with 'em.

Still hurts thinking about it.

BTW-I recently watched a K-1 tourney on ESPN. While ...

I started my MA journey when I was too young to know why, except that it was "cool". My dad was an assistant instructor for a Judo class at the local Y, so I started in that when I was about 7 or 8.

We started doing karate together when our judo club folded and the Shotokan teachers across the hall ...

This is what was behind Bruce Lee's famous "1-inch punch". He generated all the power by proper body mechanics.

i tried so hard not to come to the defence of my beloved shotokan

very usefull practical shotokan , and no wasted motion ;)

but not how it`s usually taught in the average dojo

I know. Shotokan was my first love, too.

There's something about Uechi-Ryu, though...

Kinda' like the ...

One major difference I've noticed between my former Shotokan training (brown belt) and my current Uechi training is the efficiency of the kata techniques.

Here's what I mean:
In almost all Shotokan blocks the blocking hand across to the ear, under the arm or to the hip, while the non-blocking hand ...

There's been some pretty "vivid" discussion about XMA over at bullshido.net (a very rowdy place)

http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9077

My opinion is that while I respect the athleticism that it takes to do XMA, it's moved itself out of the realm of a "true" martial art ...

I'm going to have to break out the old study guide for some of this, I haven't learned all the Japanese names of the techniques yet.

So far, these days the roundhouse that was so deadly in my past life is gone. Right now, by best move is usually just a simple front kick from the lead leg. I can ...

Your Bag o' tricks

Bill "Superfoot" Wallace was known for pretty much only using 3 techniques in the ring. Even though you knew they were coming, you couldn't stop them.

I've seen judo rondori where there is only a couple of throws used.

So what's YOUR secret weapon(s) in the ring? The tried and true techniques that ...

I've never trained with role-playing before, although Fuller sensei mentioned he had some plans to do so in the future.

Great site

Here is a site put together by the Okinawan Prefecture about the Okinawan Karate styles. Excellent design (I'm a web designer by trade) with great photos and videos.

Family Legacy

My father started me in MA when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. We did Judo together, then switched to Shotokan in 5th grade. After a bit, both my mom and little sister started as well. When we moved, my dad and I were brown belts and they were green belts.

Dad and I trained have trained together off ...

2Green,

To be honest, my sensei, a Godan, ahsn't heard of the phrase either. That's the reason I made the post. :)
