Get away begger!

I work in the city and often see beggars on the street. Today I saw a women in pink hair with a pink fraily halter top and skirt with "medical marijuana" painted across her mid section. She greeted me and stated she was "Medical Marijuana Barbie." That was definitely a first for me.

I used to be a ...

The Corporate Bully

Not to beat this to death but, I'm dealing with a more subtle but similar issue with a new boss they hired for my dept. She is very confrontational, abrupt, and unempathetic. Examples (and you can let me know if you think I'm off base):

I'm out sick for a day. I come back, still sick but making it ...

I agree with the good doctor. Having documentation and preparing for the possiblity of this individual being reprimanded for his behavior is a good plan. Be prepared, then attack when the opportunity presents itself.

I recall hearing someone suggesting that if someone is trying to carjack your car and is attempting to force you in the car, to grab at your heart, make a big sigh, and bend over or fall to the ground (faking a heart attack) (this was geared toward a general audience who may not have any self ...

Just remain in the center, watching. And then forget that you are there.

Chinese name for Sanchin?

According to books I've read, I've seen it (phonetically) spelled as Sam Chien in Chinese. I would assume that is Mandarin, but I don't know. I do know that several southern Chinese systems have a Sam Chien kata, including Tai Tsu Chuan.

I would think your rank of Shodan in Isshin ryu shows that you are committed to martial arts training. It would be different if you had a yellow belt in five styles.

Honor, humiliation and avoidance (stolen from Van's Forum)

Interesting thread. I'm glad you shared this experience with us because we then get to all grow from it.

What I find interesting in this discussion forum is applying what is learned in the dojo in a verbal format. It's always a difficult matter to properly guage an opponent's intentions and decide ...

Peaceful Warrior

I think the last few posts comment on something interesting. There are those who do not have a choice in defending themselves because they cannot. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those that do have the choice, but need to be able to control the adrenaline, anger, temperament, etc. so ...

Questions about chi

Suzette,

I think we may be at a stand-still. On your April 7 post when you mention we need a task and, "A measurable and verifiable and repeatable task, and one that we can't account for by proposing some other sort of energy," I don't know if this is possible. One task, however, I've never seen ...

Kata.

Interesting discussion. I don't mean to take away from this forum, but the same discussion was going on in E-Budo with Patrick McCarthy recently with some interesting comments:

Don't want to get your Gi dirty?

Interesting discussion. Especially looking at it from a "Verbal Self Defense" perspective (another thread).

One thing that comes to my mind as a karateka, however, is the emphasis it places on self-defense. In most self-defense situations you will most likely come up against an attacker who is ...

Questions about chi

I think we're on the right track. Although, I'm concerned about how we determine chi has been detected. I think student outlined the various scenarios well, but we need to determine what constitutes the detection of chi as opposed to other physiological readings (the difference between A1 and A2 in ...

Proposed definition of "chi" for discussion

To keep the discussion going in a clear path, I would go along with question 1, but (always a but) I would be more interested in knowing if biofeedback could be utilized to detect chi first before determining whether it could be used to develop chi. I would think we would need to know what would ...

Not to beat this to death, but...

Something another karateka had shared with me one time came up in my mind after typing the last response.

He had mentioned that at his work, an individual had thrown a high side kick within an inch of another individuals nose. I don't recall the circumstances but ...
