I found this image that I liked more to show the compression & explosion bits:

As for the not having it on film yet......oy.
I think I've only reached the placed in the last few months where I'm ready to do that. I was making it happen over the last couple years but I wasn't able to break it down well or verbalize it.

And I still only do this during specific striking movements. I need to bring it into my transitions...to make use of the dynamics during turns...as an expansion of the tenshin concept.

And having said all those excuses - I've got access to a good camera and broadcast editing equipment. So I have no excuse. I'm terrible at the down-convert and have no idea what kinds of codecs to use that the rest of the world can see. But I'll make it my project this winter to get elements on tape.

Bill's doing a good job of quantifying this approach. And just a side note - Mr. Takara never showed anything of the big exaggeration. He only (and often) said "coordinate your whole body with every movement." The exaggeration is really Mr. Nakamatsu's baby.

Bill your writings remind of something you said awhile back about Gushi Sensei - that he'd never seen a Sanseiryu soft enough for his liking. I think this approach goes in that direction. I know you saw Chris do his Sanseiryu - he's further along than path than I am. He's got that kind of natural grace I'm trying to create.

Anyway - late on Friday. Time to go home!!!!

the atlatl, to recap, was only rediscovered fairly recently by some college kids. They had heard tales of how powerful it was and yet no one knew how to reproduce the powerfull effects .there were tales of it piercing armour breastplates at a couple of hundred feet  ..............it's interesting to compare it to a woomara an Australian Aboriginal throwing aid.which is essentially the same thing..but not as effective, or having the same effect because of the materials used.there is energy still in the dart when it hits the target.giving extra penetration.........I wonder if that can be compared to a strike???......I can only think of a hiraken/backfist having the same qualities :?

jorvik,

Imagine that every joint in your body represents a place the dart can flex and create potential energy. Why not use as much as you can?

Bill - is there a way to measure in what order and to what degree the different muscle groups in the body are activated during a movement or striking technique along with the amount of force generated?

Is there a kinesiology lab in the area with a suit and a computer?

This is the kind of stuff that would have been a great research topic if I had stayed in academia.

I'll check it out, Dana. I may be able to find some takers in the academic realm. There are always a few BME (biomedical engineering) students looking for a great dissertation topic.

P.S. I'll continue with the photos when I can get myself back home for more than a few days at a time. I fly home tonight.

Dana,
I think that, that is a tremendous idea. very hard to do though, a daunting challenge :D .but one that I think you are up to. there are so many possibilities.you may discover that the real muscles we use to punch are different than the ones we think we use.you may go even further than the Okinawans  ....I remember years ago in London there was a Eurasian who worked for a hospital ..........but had never had a Tai-Chi lesson in his life, he could do the Form ( learnt from books).but also demonstrate all the great skills attributed to the masters of old  ..but using western science and no B*llsh*t.........Maybe you can do the same, certainly your background in cinamatogrophy will be an asset.why not make a film about your applications learned from Mr.Nakamatsu :?: ..and also incorporate it with the Okinawans Women's tour??.maybe a bio type thing.....I'd certainly watch it.or buy the vid

This thread is continued in the Mid-Atlantic II - Dana pictures thread. The pictures show the execution of the principles discussed above.
