RE: Dynamic Tension

Post by JCS60 »

Sorry to have come late to this party, but I only registered today. I have zero experience in Sanchin or any DT-related kata, as I have a Shorin-Ryu background. I do, however, have an interest in conditioning & physical culture.

Apparently, tension exercises have a long history in martial arts. In the late 1970's, Harry Wong authored Dynamic Strength ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... s&n=507846 ). Wong was a student of San Soo practioner Jimmy Woo who taught a series of kung fu tension exercises to condition his students. From there, John McSweeney (a student of Ed Parker & Jimmy Woo) developed his own program of seven exercises that he called Tiger Moves. Recently, John Peterson of Bronze Bow publishing authored The Miracle Seven ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 8&v=glance) basen upon McSweeney's program. Examples can be seen on Peterson's website:

For someone with no access to weights, this type of conditioning can be very result-producing with very little chance of injury.

Sorry if I strayed off topic, but I thought that others with no Uechi/Goju/Isshin background might be able to research some the materials to incorperate into their personal training.

Hi Jay and welcome.

I had a chance to meet Andy Rogdriguez from your association earlier this year at a seminar in Frederick, MD with Mr. Patrick McCarthy. Andy was a great guy to meet and talk with though I don't think we got to train together.

Anyway - thanks for dropping by.

cheers,
Dana
