Ever have green beens with fat back in it? I hadn't until I moved here. It finds its way into even the hospital cateteria's food.

The morons who make the food put little cards in front of the selection that says the green beens have zero fat... but then you look down at them and there is a huge hunk of fat floating in it and a layer of grease on top :bad-words:
Meta:
Actually, my main food vice?
Country-fried steak with mashed 'taters or biscuits and smothered with white country gravy and a side of grits.
Good stuff!

But yeah, I have no idea why most parts of the U.S. have to cook green beans in bacon grease...
:?:

BTW: Anyone know what the heck "Corn-pone" is?
I saw it on the menu at a greasy spoon out in the sticks in Georgia, but never asked what it was.

On the whole wheat pasta issue, try:
Soba!
Good stuff, and tastes great with marinara!

Me boys don't mess around with that sushi junk. When my youngest was 4, I would order him salmon roll at the sushi place so I could slowly introduce him to the concept. What concept? He'd peel the raw salmon off and eat only it - leaving all the foo foo stuff on the plate.

That's my boy! 8)

These days my boys implore me to go straight to the fish market where we can get it ourselves and prepare it ourselves. Much fresher that way, and they can pig out until they can't move. :P
Bug out, kitty!

Truth be told, I do love sushi, (which pertains to the rice vinegar "sumeshi" rather than the fish topping itself,) but you hit the nail on the head my friend, as real men eat sashimi!!!
:)

And don't forget this

If you are feeling brave, ask for this next time:

Hotate and Ama-ebi and Tataki.

Which are, Scallop (With Naizo-Whole body) and sweet shrimp (Raw) and head is usually fried.
Warning, this is SUPER gamey and will literally put hair on your chest!

Tataki is great! Seared Tuna on outside, but inside is Raw!
Also I recommend:
UNI (Sea Urchin)

Sort of tastes like avacado.

Now I'm all hungry..

You're missing out on some good, artery-clogging crap, Meta!
Corn pone is a dish, related to corn bread, made of corn meal or hominy, baked or fried in butter, margarine, lard or bacon grease. Corn pone has been a staple of Southern U.S. cuisine, and has been discussed by many American writers, including Mark Twain. Typically corn pone is formed in two to three inch oval shapes and features a crunchy and/or chewy texture. Many recipes can be found online.
- Wikipedia

Sometimes it really is a good thing not to know where that Southern food comes from.

And if you ever eat in rural China, and want to know what that stuff is that you're eating, don't ask! 8O

My favorite (and as well for my youngest son) other than salmon sashimi is octopus.

Image

Other than the flavor, the real interesting part of eating sashimi is the texture. Octopus is like eating chewing gum.

This is my older son's favorite.

My son says he likes the way the eggs burst in his mouth.

Meta: Yes, Wasabi is a must with Tako.

Meta:
Indeed. That's the same reason why I like it.
Your son is on his way to gourmet-dom!
There is another roe called Masago which is smaller, more flavorful, and I put in on everything from pasta to omelets.

Corn's evil mutated bastard brother, and staple of any good Nascar fan across America.

Just kidding guys.

I'll eat raw oysters, and when I used to scuba for lobster, would eat raw sea clams I found.

The raw fish though... I've tried it, and I asume it's like beer, in that it is an aquired taste.

But what strangely enough, while I can eat mountain pig, wild ferns, squid entrails and fermented slimy soybeans, Venison remains too gamey.
I'm trying to like it though...

Go figure.
