It's worth noting that my longest shift, 39 1/2 hours, was my most memorable. We stayed late when one of our patients crashed and there was no open ICU bed. My thinking was crystal clear, and we saved that woman's life. One of the best things that's ever happened to me.
I'm just going based on what the residents complain about. I had asked one what her schedule was and she said it was a 36 hour long shift. It wasn't entirely at the hospital. Since she was a surgery resident she had to do clinic that morning. Thanks for the info though, I'll feel a little less compasion for them knowing they
only work about
30 hours at a time.
You must have been riding a wave of pure adrenaline to have crystal clear thinking as you say.
Many new young Therapists (I was one of them once) like to work trauma bays. Mainly because a person's life at stake. With that in mind the adrenaline surges and it indeed does make your thinking crystal clear.
But man it winds you up. I prefer to keep my excitment contained to rapid response team calls and the occasional code blue.
