hay Ian .
You ever try marquetry ( I think that is what it's called) you use different coloured woods to build up a picture..think it would be really impressive on a bokken

As Chef pointed out, Axe handles are pre- picked to be hard and strong.
I made nice nunchucks from broken lacross sticks, got them free by asking at a nearby prep school. Good thing about them is they are multi faceted giving a nice feel and angular, small, striking surfaces. Of course, I have no intention of hitting anyone unless they invade my house, but they look dangerous.
On another note, I made a seat back for a bench seat on a boat from broken hockey sticks. Those were in the dumpster at the arena.

Urban Wood Scavenging...

Post by david »

Ian,

Let me know, next time you're up for some wood scavenging. I'll bring along a good saw and khukuri and my station wagon. May take two folks to drag a good piece wood out.

Jorvik: that would be an impressive bokken... I did make a cutting board once with alternating stripes of different wood in it, but had access to shop tools and prepared lumbar. Now I'm working with a chisel, knife, file and irregularly knotty and bendy scavenged wood, so that's well beyond the reach of my current skills.

David: might there be some restrictions on wood gathering in the arboretum, even in the trashy end--or were you thinking somewhere else? Re: checking out the bokken, if you're interested you're only a few blocks away (I'm by the harvest / agazziz school) and you're welcome to come take a look. No one at work wants to knife fight, either :( I do remember the fun of dragging good stuff out of the forest... Tim and I dragged a water logged 3.5 ft, 16 inch diameter length of oak out of a forest and somehow got it into a car trunk. Also suckered him into carrying another water logged oak trunk home in maryland, which is now part of chair made of beaver-cut timber.

Ian,

Not the arboretum. Drove by their dumping area yesterday. Really small stuff and a big pile of mulch (which they make from deadfall). Scavenging can be had in Franklin Park, woods off VFW, woods up off Washington St. in the W. Roxbury/Dedham line and the Blue Hills among other nearby places. Actually this is a good time of year to look. You can see fallen trees and limbs hundreds of yards from the road in some places. A heavy piece can be dragged/slid out more easily on ice/snow.

Sure, I like to check out your bokken. I can bring my four, each of different weight and curvatures/styles, if you want some references. I can bring my jo's but what's to say... different weights but all the "standard" shape. :) I have tantos but don't know where I placed them since the last time out practicing with them.

When you have a free weekend day, we can arrange something.

Maybe practice with wood scalples? :)
