SPEAKING OF LOCKS, CHECK OUT THE LATEST ISSUE OF JAMA

Post by HALFORD E. JONES »

:D The latest issue of THE JOURNAL OF ASIAN MARTIAL ARTS, which is one publication I always recommend to everyone, has an article entitled:HARA-GATAME:JUDO'S RARE STOMACH ARMLOCK! Hope you can stomach it! It's rare reading but I think helps confirm something that I have said about technique vs. principle?????

Hara gatame isn't really rare. It just developed into Waki gatame.
It began using the bottom of the chest plate of armor, then the "big belly" was utilized. It then became waki gatame, the armpit pin we know and love.

Rousey didn't medal by the way, she did beat some good competitors though.

INTERESTING COMMENT,FRED!

Post by HALFORD E. JONES »

:D I should hope you'd do a piece for JAMA on this and its origins to show why this is not rare and what it developed into if you could or at least contact Mike DiMarco, the publisher and see what he thinks about it. Yes, the girls in judo didn't win but neither did Pedro the gold. One girl fencer won a gold but not the expected one!

Phil Porter taught me that one.

He taught us 300+ ways of getting waki gatame and it's origins.
I remember about 3 of them  .
No great claim to any knowledge beyond that.

Here is Sensei Porters website.

A wealth of knowledge in Judo. They should interview him.
