Sounds to me like there just isn't much contact used in that dojo; I could be wrong, but that is what it sounds like.

I suppose it's tough to balance hard training with safe training these days from an insurance angle but as Bruise said equipment should take care of that for the most part.

As far as getting kicked in the jewels and getting PO'd about it.. 1. You should be protecting that area; 2. you should be wearing a cup.. Get PO'd at yourself! No excuses..

In my old dojo hard contact to the face and body was used and blood on gi's was common. I got cracked ribs, nearly dislocated jaw, KO'd, sent flying across the room, etc more often than I'd like.. That kind of sparring is a lot like fighting and it does keep you sharp and the only gear we had were those little Tiger Claw gloves, instep guards a cup and a mouthpiece.

Had anyone from that dojo came out publicly and commented about a lack of contact and how good they were and the Dan ranks found out about it, well, God help you in the next sparring class.. 8O

Most folks today do not want to get hurt and I agree, equipment is the way to go for hard contact these days it takes care of lots of problems and helps folks work out their bugs while staying out of the hospital... Play hard/Play safe..

I think it`s true that when the students ready the teacher will appear . But you got to do the looking .

I can only second Stryke's comment.

You have to remember in today's commercialized dojos most people are there to get a good workout and maybe learn something in the process. For them karate is only a hobby. Something they do twice a week from six to seven. You can't expect them to do " Mortal Combat" with you.

You get all kinds in the dojo. It's unavoidable. So if you want more you gotta go out there and find it.
