From a buddhist perspective, I've spent my time practicing the martial arts, killing the person I used to be. You see, I tried unbalancing, trapping, controlling, etc...

Trust me, it doesn't work.

Well for a start that is not a Buddhist perspective

Just a wild guess here, but I 'm thinking that you've never done judo

Are you sure it's a Buddhist perspective?

Yeah, I tried judo, quite the learning experience. Don't see too many news stories about people being attacked by judo wielding criminals these days.

Which of course has nothing to do with the issues of unbalancing, et al..

To suggest that balance (and structure) destruction--the core of most all arts, and 'trapping' essentially holding while hitting, illegal in boxing, doesn't work (and then go on to say so and so CAN do it) is patently absurd, contradictory and a bit goofy.. And that's not addressing all the other elements of positioning and structure that were also mentioned.

It might be more appropriate, and accurate to say it doesn't work for you.

Good comments from a doorman in England about the problems in his country with self protection. Scroll down and watch this guys video.

I'd say 90 % of that was self promotion.he's selling DVD's on his website, some of his insights are very good, but Liverpool isn't the way he makes out, neither are the police or the bouncers

Fivedragons,,
i understand what you are getting at. however on the whole the concept is incomplete. you cant always be (and only be) hitting the guy. he will be hitting you too, you know. besides you have more then only one limb. while one hand is puching him the other hand will be gabbing his hair or collar to off balance and controll him as you punch the crap out of him. to state that these actions are not found in kata would be overly simplistic if not blind.

oh and as a side note..
i have been around for some time as well,,, have also tried unbalancing , trapping , controlling..... i also happen to be a buddhist for over 20 years . spent several years training in an authentic zen school ( Diahonzen chozen-ji linage) and had awsome teachers who showed me how this stuff really does work..

Hoshin, that's really cool. I'm not a buddhist, but of all the "ists", I have to say that by and large, those kind of ists really seem to be on the ball.

Once while meditating, this ghastly demon/succubus/zombie looking face popped up out of the darkness in color and 3D, right in my face. I felt the initial reaction of shock and repulsion starting but somehow I was drawn to gaze in it's eyes. I saw nothing but pure suffering and the need to be acknowledged there. I was totally overcome by a tender feeling of compassion and sorrow. The features on it's face softened and it dissolved, as though it had been released.

Sometimes I feel that in another life I might have taken a boddhisatva vow, and now I'm having second thoughts.

If only I could find a way to help.

I'll find a way. :o
