This was the crux of the "whole-word learning" phenomenon which displaced phonetic analysis.
So now we have an entire generation of virtual illiterates who can not only not spell, but are also unable to pronounce any word they have not previously encountered.
(This would appear to be most of the dictionary.)

On the other hand, a friend of mine from another country told me that 600 words is all you need to be functional in a foreign language.
In my experience, it's about 60 in your native language, and if you can't read or write them, well, that's ok.
