My take (on first blush) is that it's high on hyperbole and hucksterism.

That being said... There's some truth to what's in here. Unfortunately the truth is buried in the hyperbole and - in some cases - irrelevant to you the non-medical consumer.

I'll go over some details in a bit. I'm sure Ian and I can have some fun with it. I wouldn't call this book useless. It's just that the sales pitch is annoying. I feel all dirty reading it - as if I just had a conversation with a salesperson in a used car lot. (That's why I NEVER buy a car based on what the salesman tells me. I do my research ahead of time, and then walk in asking for a deal.)

Anyhoo... More in a bit. 8)

So if you never want to die from CANCER... Never have another STROKE or HEART ATTACK... Never get crippled by OSTEOPOROSIS or EMPHYSEMA... Never fall victim to ALZHEIMER'S, PARKINSON'S or DEMENTIA... Read on!
Note the carefully written language. They're not saying you'll never die from cancer, have another stroke or heart attack, never get crippled by osteoporisis or emphysema, never fall victim to alzheimer's Parkinson's or dementia. All they're saying is that if this is what you want... read on. Meanwhile they have officially promised you nothing. Zilch. Nada. Zippo.

Classic marketing trick - high on sizzle, and low on steak. I hate marketing. I just want the bare naked truth. * But to get that, I have to endure all this bullschit language. And frankly they're not very good at it. It offends me.

But after you put your bullschit filter on, you read blah blah blah blah fact 1 blah blah blah blah blah fact 2 blah blah blah.

I'll get into some of the facts in a bit.

* Reminds me of a friend of mine who once told his girlfriend "No need to put that sexy nightie on. I'll just pull it off before we have sex."

It won Dr. Ignarro the Nobel Prize!
Lois Ignarro won the Nobel Prize for showing how nitric oxide acts as a vasodilator. With that original research done, the pharmaceutical industry went about creating drugs that helped produce and/or preserve nitric oxide. Originally this was all about the heart.

Then one day, some PhD who probably got laid the night before began obsessing about another love muscle. And the end result? Viagra. Forget the heart; the invention of Viagra earned Pfizer a bloody fortune.

This just goes to show where men's priorities are...

HEART ATTACK

Incredibly, this all-star medical team reports you can make yourself more than 10 times less likely to die of one.
Chew a baby aspirin on the first sign of a heart attack.

"CURE" HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN HOURS, without diet, drugs, supplements or exercise. This alone could drop your blood pressure as much as 23%! Page 74
I'm calling bullschit here. Major, major hyperbole.

Calcium and magnesium in the diet can lower your blood pressure a bit. And they're good for you - especially if in the presence of Vitamin D.

Not long ago, all doctors thought strokes were untreatable. Paralysis, weakness or death were pretty much inevitable. But the breakthrough drug called TPA is changing everything.
TPA has been around for 3 decades.

If you have signs of a stroke, get your butt to the hospital ASAP so they can administer this clot-busting drug and preserve brain tissue.

DEADLY MELANOMA COULD BE 100% CURABLE
And Jennifer Lopez COULD want to have my children.

Image

Hey, it could happen!

Treatment depends upon the stage of the cancer.

Most important thing is to get a GOOD surgeon who will excise the melanoma tissue and no more - for aesthetic reasons.

Stage III and IV generally involve additional therapy. While chemo is the tride-and-true approach, there are some new treatments (e.g. immunotherapy) coming on the horizion.

COMMON ADVICE ABOUT SUNSCREENS could kill you! Forget the "high SPF" formulas and look for these little-known ingredients instead.
Each ingredient has its own light band of protection. Generally you need three different ingredients to get full UVA and UVB protection. (These generally include PABA derivatives, salicylates, and/or cinnamates (octylmethoxycinnamate and cinoxate) for UVB absorption; benzophenones (such as oxybenzone and sulisobenzone) for shorter-wavelength UVA protection; and avobenzone (Parsol 1789), ecamsule (MexorylTM), titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide for the remaining UVA spectrum.)

And never use antibacterial soaps...
Never is a strong word. I use antibacterial soap in the kitchen after I handle raw chicken. Otherwise the stuff does more harm than good.

Independent supplement tester Dr. Tod Cooperman, MD, made a special appearance on the Hugh Downs TV program to warn consumers of appalling dangers from trusted supplements. His organization recently tested over 500 popular vitamin and mineral products—and many were contaminated with arsenic, lead and pesticides! Many others failed to dissolve properly, or didn't contain what their labels claimed.
True. Buyer (in "health" food stores) beware!
  • Most vitamin supplements aren't needed if you have a balanced diet. In some cases they do more harm than good.
  • Look online for independent testing of a particular products.
  • Some companies (e.g. Twinlab) tend consistently to perform better on independent tests.
  • When taking an herb, only take those marked "standardized". Otherwise you have no idea how much of the active ingredient you're getting.
  • For some supplements (e.g. fish oil) you want to be very careful. Good stuff. But make sure it's molecularly distilled and/or says it's been tested and is free of heavy metals and PCBs.

Health researchers now admit that too much exercise can kill you! So how much is enough? How about 20 seconds! On page 530 of your newly expanded World's Greatest Treasury of Health Secrets, you'll discover the ultimate "smart" exercise. It takes just 20 seconds, and you repeat it for only 10 minutes. Do it two or three days a week, and you're good to go.
Don't get me started...

Famed pain researcher Dr. Norman Marcus, MD, of New York University School of Medicine, made a special appearance on the Hugh Downs program—to refute painful myths about back pain. He insists you don't need surgery or drugs, and he's got the proof. His easy new cure was tested on people with seriously ruptured disks, and proved significantly more successful than risky surgery.
Any back surgeon will tell you that surgery is ALWAYS the last resort. And usually that's the beginning of the end of your life as you know it. New arthroscopic surgical techniques are a bit better. But if at all possible, work with PT before going under the knife.
