Email Spammers are Winning

Post by Allen M. »

There is this dude who spams me on an almost daily basis. I filter him out regularly, but he burns right through the filter and shows up in the in box.

So I filtered EVERYONE as an experiment. Last resort I returned the infamous "REMOVE" message to this guy.

Probably time to get a firewall. About six months ago or a year ago I mentioned black ice which seemed to be unpopular with Tony. Now, with the deluge of junk mail, I'm ready to seriously investigate a firewall.

Black Ice caused problems with my display for some reason. It also doesn't work on outbound traffic (at least my version didn't). I'm using Zonelabs Zonealarm now. I don't see how a firewall is going to filter email though. It does look for viruses but it doesn't read the mail headers. I'm not sure any of them do.

Bad move... Basically all that does is prove to them that they have a valid e-mail address...

Try putting together a forged "bounce" message and flooding it back to them. Send one or two to make sure that their e-address is valid (you don't want to get hit with the bomb you're sending Image ), then if the address is valid, flood it with a few hundred or a thousand of the "bounce" messages. They'll stop sending to your address and put it as "invalid" in their notes. Help from your sysadmin will make it work even better.

The problem these days is that the spammers rotate addresses faster than you can put them into the kill-file. There are ways to filter the spams, but the best thing is to guard your email address(es).

A firewall protects your machine, but doesn't prevent legitimate (or legitimate appearing) incoming traffic.

I never do that, but this email address kept refusing to go into my "bogus" folder after filtering him several ways. They are what smells like a valid company, and so far it looks like they honored my request.
