scan disk/defrag

Can someone tell me how to do this?

I lost my notes on it.

Also, from what I remember, I must defrag from a safe start mode or it will not work.

Can someone click me to it from safe start ?

Thanks.

Van,

What OS and what defragmenter are you using?

I'm at home and you can call me if you wish to pursue this in detail with me.

Assuming you are running Win95 or Win98, you can double-click on My Computer, then right-click on the drive you want to work with and go into Properties. From there you go to Tools, and you can 'Check now', to run Scandisk, or 'Defragment now' to run defrag. I have not booted to Safe Mode to do either, but it is probably a good idea.

Does that answer your question?

Van ,If you go into programs, accessories, system tools, scheduled tasks........you can program these maintenance programs to run on a routine schedule. Most of my system gets spruced up will I sleep on Wed. evenings around 3 am.

Hi Laird,

Thanks.Sounds great.

Will the PC turn on and stop automatically, or do I need to turn it on before bedtime.

Laird,

Also I found on previous occasions, when trying to defrag, it would not complete the task, not until I started the PC in safe mode.

How will this work out in auto schedule?

Thanks.

Van, Yes your PC must be on to run this program.(I almost never shut mine down)

I have not encountered the safe mode issue when defrag. is running so you've got me stumped. Image

Van has quite a few resident utilities running in the background which cause Defrag to cycle over and over again and never finish. Rather then clean up his start menu, over the phone, a daunting task, I told him to boot to safemode once a week and scandisk/defrag his drive.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the reply. I had lost the notes on your recommendations. Glad you are reminding me of it.

BTW, how do I start in safe mode? This time I promise to write it all down.

Thank you.

Van,

1)restart your computer

2)after the BIOS loads and before the Windows 98 screen comes: press F8

3)you'll get a menu of boot options, select "Safe Mode".

4)your machine will start with no drivers or resident utilities. You may still have to kill your virus scanner manually though. Do that.

5)run scandisk

6) Run Defrag

Thats it! Restart your computer.
