Well - things were really starting to get interesting here on this forum - I was enjoying the last couple theads and was looking forward to writing a few replies this weekend...
Then hurricane Irene decided to track across Florida - and even though once again we were spared a direct hit - we have had lots of damage and flooding. No where near the problems the Carolinas are facing but aggravating just the same.
We lost two trees - one of which yanked all the utility wires out of our house - but before that the exploding transformer caused a power spike that caught an outlet on fire - thankfully we were awake and found the souce of the smoke before too much damage...
The roof held - thankfully (quite a few on my street did not!) and the water damage came up from UNDER the house! Things are a bit soggy but not under water.
Then there was the interesting adventure of bailing out the listing sailboat when the bilge pumps didn't come on and the cockpit drains were closed causing it to fill to the top with water - so there I was with the manual bailing pump - this was during 50mph winds and driving rain at the end of a dock that was almost completely under water - whisting shrouds and crashing waves... well, you get the picture.
Don't you all wish you lived in Florida?
So - the storm hit south Florida first - and the power company informs us that most of their emergency teams are down there - so the live power line in OUR backyard is going to have to wait a few days.
The end result is that once again I'll be offline for a while. I'm posting this from one of the very lucky houses who still have power... but I'm not too sure when or how often I'll be back. We've got a lot of clean up to do.
So please keep the discussion going - there were some great points being brought up. I hope I'll be back soon to add some more points of my own.
Peace,
Lori
