I have been a student of jujitsu for like 4 to 5 years,I had to leave my first jujitsu school cause the instructors actions outside involving the senior student and his wife. In the second school went from teaching jujitsu as a lifestyle to it being a business and using a collection agency to get money from students. Am I wrong to think this is wrong? Am I wrong to look for an instructor with honor? I gave up black belts in 2 schools cause I felt there was no honor or they had drifted away from what martial arts was supposed to really be about. I would love you input.

It would be great if all instructors were honorable. However the truth is they are like everything else we bump into, a snap shot of society. You will find good, bad, and ugly in our ranks.

I have always treated my social contacts this way: if I feel that their actions in no way bring any unwarranted embarrassment to me, then I have no need to stop contact. If I feel their actions are casting a shadow on me because of my association with them then I must ask myself is this someone I wish to be connected with. Maybe it is time to move on.

Train and focus on your karate, who knows what some instructors are up to. If we all walked away from instructors who were involved in extra-marital affairs, far fewer of us would be training.

You don't control the actions of others, so don't feel responsible.

In the first case, I would also have left the instructor for that error. There are certain things I expect of those I'm associated with and cheating with the spouse of a student isn't one of them!

In the second case, it depends. Afterall, if the person is operating a business, provides a service and the person obtaining the service doesn't pay... well, the business owner deserves to get paid. Usually, this type of thing is worked out between the sensei and the student in question and shouldn't be an issue for other students to get involved in. OTOH, if the business owner was just pushing for money and using a strong-arm type tactic to "collect" more from all the students, then I'd have a problem.

Absolutely NOT! They're out there and they DO exist. Keep looking... There's a forum here for looking for a dojo/instructor. Let folks know what you're looking for and where you're living and maybe someone can help.

Sometimes we reach a point in the destination and suffer major set-backs... Don't sweat it, $hit happens. Just keep on the path and things will work out.

NOw, let's think about this a second... Would you have really felt good about a "black belt" from someone who had no honor?

I didn't think so. Keep at it and ask for some recommendations on the "Searching for a dojo/teacher" forum.
