Re: Intimidation vs Throwing Sand

Nothing is ever guaranteed. On the other hand in demos like that you have a person who 1) knows ahead of time that they are going to get sprayed with time to mentally prepare and 2) has the singular task of trying to push the pain aside and get the sprayer without any other considerations to worry ...

Intimidation vs Throwing Sand

A humorous take on what we have heard often about using tactics such as intimidation or throwing sand (or other objects) into an opponents face, in this case the two used against each other with hilarious results. From the comedy series The Exes.

Re: Karate for Mental Health: How Martial Arts Combat Stress and Anxiety?

I can definitely relate to the first paragraph of that article lately. And yes, the martial arts help, as do many physical activities that require concentration, effort, and ideally sweat. But while that is important I feel it is only one-third of the solution, the other equal components being ...

Brain Safety, Age, and Takedowns

The soke of the branch of Uechi Ryu in which I currently train first began training in the 1950s and remembers applications of the kata having numerous takedown techniques that were removed over time, which he has worked to reintroduce into the bunkai that he teaches, which I am all for. However as ...

Re: Post War (A)

I am not really thinking of how emphatic the count is done in some dojo, I am referring to formal versus informal pronunciations...ichi pronounced as ee-chee versus eech for example. But I have never heard an informal form of roku that is spoken as a single syllable (rok) except in dojo counting, in ...

Re: Post War (A)

I think the spoken simplification of Japanese numbers to a single syllable each is simply because it provides a better cadence while working out. At least that is how it is explained in the dojo I attend where there are a couple people with training in the Japanese language, including one American ...

Re: Post War (A)

Regarding my other point, is there any definitive information one way or the other as to whether or not Kanei may have studied some karate in Okinawa before joining his father in Wakayama?

Re: Post War (A)

Thanks Seizan, I suspected you may have addressed these in your Bunburyodo books. I have all three, I just have to find time to read them!

Re: Post War (A)

Regarding the mention by Kanei of demonstrating 5 kata to Miyagi, I think there are two likely possibilities:

1) Kanei had already done some karate training in Okinawa prior to joining his father at age 16 and knew some kata from that time (possibly influencing what he added to Uechi Ryu); and/or ...

Re: Post War (A)

A picture exists of Kanei Uechi getting punched by sumo practitioner Akamine at the demonstration described by Noble above, this was around 1940.

Jodan zuki uke is the move George demonstrated there. It is a favorite technique of Takashi Kinjo (a student of Seiki Itokazu who was a student of Kanei Uechi) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DNPg3WsSjE

Re: Sanchin Practices

I read somewhere an idea that Sanchin may have been developed initially in a coastal port of southern China (like Fuzhou) at least in part to help train for fighting on a boat, where an 'anchored' foundation can be quite beneficial and piracy was an ever-present risk. The reasoning was that the ...

Re: The Uechi Domicile

Hi Seizan, always a pleasure to converse with you. I have a copy of your Volume 1 (first release, before it became Volume 1) and Volume 2, but must admit I have not had a chance to read Volume 2 yet. And I still need to order Volume 3. At any rate, I would not want to repeat back to you your own ...
