Role Models

I'm not sure who my role model is....I learn things from alot of people all over the world and I enjoy learning from both men and women.....so I guess that everyone is my role model...whether white belt or black belt!!

Attacked in the shower

I would hit him first, but most people will grab the Shaving cream....

1. It's a metal can, not plastic.

2. Even without shaking the can, it will expel the aresol in the can.

Sanseiryu "downblock"

Hi all....I always envision the "downblock" as a very effective striking technique...

From the "ready" position of one hand up and one down (before the strike).

Instead of thinking it as a ready position, envision this: the top hand is striking from back to front on the opponent's jaw and the ...

Shutting your eyes

I also find it difficult to keep my eyes open when something is coming at my face.

I think it stems back from my childhood and being scared of the baseball after getting hit in the face.

I have tried to overcome this, with very little success. It has just become a reaction that takes over when I ...

Women must be dangerous...

I agree totally!! I have tried to reinforce with my ladies that you are never nice when defending yourself or your family....it still takes alot to get it through to them.

Your hair and self defense

Hi Dana....I have a great technique for you...

If the person is wearing a pony tail....use the back of your hand to "slap" them on the side of the neck and see where their pony tail lands.....right in your hand!!

Great little handle you now have.....

kata realism

My katas are everything to me!! I used to get real bummed out when we had to do kata, but now I love it...I know what they mean!!

I always visualize my opponent while I am doing my katas....then I ask one of the guys in class if I can try a technique on them from the kata that I am working on to ...

Women as Martial Arts Instructors

Hi Dana...

I have seen and experienced the feel of being treated "inferior" because I am a female instead of a Male.

I just look at it that those people who judge me on my sex instead of my talents as a student I would not want to teach anyways.

womans self defense classes

Hi Dana,

I never use finger locks by themselves...always put something else with them....you can only expect them to work to a certain degree or time depending on the situation.

Sometimes they are more effective than others because of the location of the attack....

If the finger lock will get ...

Martial Arts vs. Self Defense

Interesting information Dana....I think we can also take some of the information with a grain of salt, because some schools teach different things....as always.

Still, good information.

Polarity

Ian....yes, women's energy is opposite of men's. We can change that with a different kind of strike or by a different stance too.

Most of my background is Shorin-ryu. I started learning Ryukyu Kempo about 3 years ago and that's where I learned to put Small Circle Jujitsu into our techniques to make them more effective.

Just like the finger locks...they are good, but when you add the SCJ into it, then they become great!!
