First... I agree 100% with you not using straps to improve your deadlifts. Uechi and grappling require very strong hands. You're doing this right.

A boxer doesn't have to worry about hands so much, Marcus. They wrap their wrists, which pull all the hand bones together into a solid mass. Then they put a big pillow over the top of that. Therefore, they don't worry much about strength past the elbow.

But lets get to applied Uechi. Now I'm speaking of a MMA or a McCarthy-esque, street Uechika as opposed to the gloved, punch-and-kick variety. You will want to gouge with those pointed things, grab body parts in nasty ways with your hirakens and boshikens, dig your knuckles into soft areas, throw and grapple with people, etc. That you do on top of the balls-to-the-wall palm-heel thrusts that lift folks off the ground as their heads snap back. A good Uechika needs to have a grip strong enough to hold that deadlift without straps. So you are right on track here - in my humble opinion. Others (chewy) agree with me here. He's his own brand of MMA, and he doesn't use either wrist straps or a weight belt on his deadlift.

Still... Even with those qualifications, you've got a 4, 4, 3 ratio of Deadlift to Squat to Bench. With straps (pulling the grip out of the equation), you'd probably do something like a 5 to 4 to 3.

I think you're on the right track with your training, Marcus. Oh, and those are all VERY respectable numbers. Your lower body numbers will improve with time. I think you'll find that's where your greatest future gains will come.

I take it that when you get some largely incurable and only manageable problem (ie most medical problems) you're just going to wait it out with green tea and zen meditation? Or what is the point?

We're in a golden age of learning. BECAUSE of science (rigorous investigation), the amount of stuff we know is skyrocketing. It's almost hard to comprehend. Science has turned a bunch of superstitious losers who were playing with rocks and sticks for tens of thousands of years into the first species in the known universe to ably manipulate their own environment from space travel and long range telescopes down to subatomic particles, and the molecular basis of life, in a few hundred years. It's simply astonishing. Whenever we compare what we know to what is out there (infinity), of course it won't look like much--but that's because of the useless comparison. And, whining won't advance the ball. What we need now (instead of critiques of the fact that science is educating us only exponentially!) are people to ask probing questions and move the process along.

We should also mention the alternative--eschew science for the comforting world of superstition, and talk about chi for thousands of years without making any progress understanding it!

thanks Bill , I dont use a belt either , try and do everything Raw , the core strengt is the goal after all .

I agree that the the lower body numbers will get the most gain , I really think bench is overated for what i`m trying to acheive .

I`d be happy If I get my bench up to around 350 and dead and squat double my body weight .

I seriously struggle without the straps , it`s much harder to acheive the max deadlift vs the max squat or bench .

But hopefully it`ll pay off .

I`m still not sure about going backwards though 8)
