uechi-ryu links to wing chun through wauke?

Post by AAAhmed46 »

I was watching some wing chun sparring, i noticed that they use movement similar to the wauke.
Rick teaches us to use the wauke in fifty different ways. Alot of it trapping, and using it for attacking and such.

Was there a post for this before?

oh... good Sensei.. lucky you. But you still need to download that hook video and get it to run (I posted it for you). No explanation can replace 1000 reps on the heavy bag.

yeah he's awsome. 8)

Ill download that video, i got a bag but cant hand it anywhere.
Rick teaches mostly openhand stuff, though i noticed he lets me use closed fist strikes to the body. Hence my hooks to the body question.

I've talked about the wa-uke in several posts.. There is no wa-uke per se in WCK but there are tools and movements that could be seen as parts of the wa-uke, or variants of the wa-uke.

Did that answer your question? If not feel free to ask.

Jim
Maybe the Bong-Sau could look a bit like a Wauke to some

Well I could actually "find" most of the wa-uke in WCK but the application would be different or done in a way not consistent with how most Uechi-ka see the wa-uke..

Lop Sao is one that I think folks would see as the wa-uke. Now if I put my hands out there in Jong Sao and the other guy does a nice Herman Munster straight punch I don't need to move my arm hardly at all, by keeping the elbow in and turning the wrist outward I can do a microscopic version of the wa-uke that goes from deflection to hand wrap grab with almost no motion.. But is that a wa-uke? Well, I think, it probably is AN expression...

I got got a Wing chun self defense video and the blocks and movements aka tenshin looked very Uechi to me. I taught several of the applications on the tape in class and no one noticed it wasn't Uechi per se.
He used a hiraken to release a wrist grab which was a nasty application of a sometimes overlooked Uechi weapon.
Matter of fact I should stop typing and watch some more.
Later.

Interesting..who's tape? Sounds a little like Cheung.. The move you describe doesn't ring a bell.. Wrist grabs are normally dealt with by either simply hitting them, or dropping the elbow to opposite hand slap <pak> release with a simultaneous hit and follow-ups.
