Wow! Raffi made Black Belt Magazine? KILLER!

My Father was in a spread in Black Belt Magazine back in the 60's doing a spread with Shorin Ryu Guru Ansei Ueshiro. I have never been able to find it though....

This is to the fellow who calls himself "The Bronze Dago".
I have a pretty fair collection of Black Belt Magazines from the mid sixties to the seventies. If you could give me the year and the month of the publication that your father and Master Ueshiro were in I may be able to find the article for you.

wow! Let me call my dad and ask him...

I had posted it a long time ago here hoping someone had the issue but I can't remember what it was. It may have been in 1969 and it was a Sai or Tonfa spread...

Hi Jim, I spoke with my Dad and he said he was in a consecutive spread in both the July and August issues of 1969 and corrected me on his Sensei. The name of his Sensei was actually Seijun Kina and they performed Bo and Tonfa techniques. If you have either or both of these issues and get scan them into a PDF, I will be forever indebted to you. :D

Hi Tony,

No problem. :D I know how special fathers can be as mine was/is my teacher too.

I think you oughta post that first opening picture of your pa blocking the bo with the tonfa. That’s a nice one…you can definitely see a resemblance between you two. 8)

Tony, what a legacy to have a son follow in the father's footsteps and embrace the same passions. I love the picture. Thanks for posting.

It's funny how genes work Van... My brother got my dads build, tall and thin, and I got my grandfathers build on my mothers side (the Bruccoleri's).

What a fantastic discovery...

Does your dad ever drop in to these forums? Bet he would be proud of you.

Does he still train? Teach?

George, he's posted a few times actually... I think in Vans forum under the alias "Pine Tree" which I think has something to do with Shorin Ryu. He hasn't trained in years but he encourages me to keep on it.

He actually lived and trained with his Sensei in the picture for many years.. he was very dedicated to Karate. I remember my mother taking me to his dojo when I was very young and watching them do kata... funny, the thing I remember most was my Pop heading towards me, lifting his chin up and breathing (some kabuki breathing exercise)! How ironic is that? :D

But to answer your question, no he's not training anymore.. :( I'm planning on visiting him this coming February. I haven't seen him in many years.
