I believe Bill made some very excellent points. The whole concept of testing Sanchin leads to some rhetorical questions, specifically what is the main purpose and what is trying to be achieved by the testing?

I've been tested by Takamiyagi Sensei in the past. When everyone lined up in his line, everyone in that line knew it was going to be a "vigorous test." It was very clear that the method deployed was no secret and it should be no surprise if you got Takamiyagi Sensei who was going to test you.

I believe the question real question revolves around, can the objective be accomplished by just "pressing" a select area of the body with that particular student or does a "harder" method need to be imposed to literally drive the point home?

This type of testing is very subjective. There are a lot of factors that weigh into the method. The teacher's persona, the student's persona and what they both believe should be the appropriate method. It gets very emotional very quickly, however I do believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher not to harm the student, but to help push the student to achieve something that is within themselves.

I was talking with a senior American instructor recently who told me back when he was competing in Okinawa Takimiyagi had one of the most lethal front kicks he had ever seen. This instructor, who had to spar Shinjo at one point, told me he would not want to be hit by one of Takimiyagi's kicks.

When watching a demonstration of conditioning with Yonamine in particular, the video clearly shows trememdous kicking power during a Sanchin test.

This isn't the greatest video but it shows a nasty Sanchin test by Yonamine Sensei in it.
But don't buy it for instructional value, it doesn't have any.

You have to laugh at the parking meter thing.
When was the last time muggers afforded you the luxury of warming up?

I have no doubt several Okinawans I have trained with could beat the crap out of a parking meter.
But I never met a predator who would wait while you did it.

The guy in the fore front kicking the ball_ after a pass from me_ his name BRUNO_ when drafted in the Army and sent to Panama_ he ended up on the US Army soccer team playing against the Panamenians and other latin army teams.

He was the very best we had.

Oh those Okinawans probably could. But with thier shins or thier palms? Palms would make sense. There is a video of an okinawan old man hitting a coconut tree and shaking it, while younger guys could not. But i dont think he was doing it with his shins. No amount of conditioning can make your shins harder then steel.

We just don't hit it off. You seem to put a spin on much of what I write and misinterpret not only what I say but the intent of what is written.

John, why do you not refer to George Sensei as Master Matson? You seem keen on titles. Why not show George the same respect you shower on others?

No offence intended just curious.

I have a deep respect for GEM, for his authorship, for his encouragement to cross-train in other matial art styles, for his loyalty to the Uechi family and organization and so on. I have purchased his videos, T-shirts and training publications for years. I respect George Mattson.

Typos, miskeyings, mistakes ... don't give me the BS excuses. You are responsible for what you write and how you write and you just aren't careful about how you read something and how you respond.

I think you owe Mattson Sensei an apology. Quit worrying about how I show respect and show it yourself by at least using a Hachidan's correct name.

John I think George realises I spelled his name incorrectly in error. Would you like me to proof read your posts for errors, there have been a few I suspect.

Why don't you bury that chip on your shoulder pal. I was not the only one to wonder why it was master this and master that and never master Mattson .

It appears we do have one thing in common we both respect the accomplishments of the man and his life long commitment to Uechi.

George sensei speaks kindly of you. I however prefer to form my own opinion based on my interactions with you on the forums. So far you have done nothing to change my initial impression. Every post just confirms it sir.

We don't hit off because.....of how I perceive you. Also you labeled me off having some kind of anal fetish. I still have a desire to mess you up for that. Now your taking me to task for my typing and spelling errors. Guess your looking to feud,so be it!
