Yep...
It should be no mystery why we're the fattest nation on this earth. People eat first for taste and convenience. And when you do that, you get what you get.
The old fashioned "eat your fruits and vegetables" and "home-cooked meal" is looking better and better every day. Even with the butter and salt, it wasn't that bad. Adding half a bit of sense to the old mainstay diet puts you in pretty good shape.
The smart thing to do? Just eat at home, and keep crappy food out of the house in the first place. Whenever possible, use fresh ingredients. If you knew what they put into convenience food...
And get George to send you some of his fresh oranges.

Just an idea for the health conscious:
This is what I eat for breakfast:

Grossed out yet?
Talk about morning dragon breath!

BTW this is "Natto" (Naht-Tow)

It is fermented soybean curd, tastes great (Think deep flavored baked beans), and is slimy, and....
is alive with several kinds of beneficial bacteria.
(Hence the slime strings)
MmmmMMmmMmMmmM!

A long time ago I reported to a GE factory near Orlando (Plymouth) and flew down just about every week. On the return trip I always had as large a bag of oranges as I could carry. My kids thought everybody's dad did that! As I recall, that plant was just down the road from where GEM now resides! And get George to send you some of his fresh oranges.
Unfortunately, in the mid 80s the frost line moved south of Orlando and seriously damaged the orange groves. I wonder if the trees ever came back.

My dad drove a semi for GE for 20 years, roughly early-70s to early-90s, and would occassionally deliver to places in Florida. Every once in a while he'd bring goodies like that back from those places.RACastanet wrote: A long time ago I reported to a GE factory near Orlando (Plymouth) and flew down just about every week. Just for fun:
If RACastanet was a Rastafarian:

It's getting so you can't swing a dead ninja without smacking a Sushi-ya upside the noggin..

Hello to all from the bible/coranary artery disease belt!
Ever have green beens with fat back in it? I hadn't until I moved here. It finds its way into even the hospital cateteria's food.
The morons who make the food put little cards in front of the selection that says the green beens have zero fat... but then you look down at them and there is a huge hunk of fat floating in it and a layer of grease on top
I brown bag it to work.
------------------------------------------
One other thing that we all should watch out for is white bread, pasta, and other processed foods. They convert to sugar rapidly and cause a huge insulin spike which also causes you to store excess calories as fat.
I have switched to whole grain pasta and have been eating wheat bread ever since I can remember.

I know what you mean, Ben. You have to realize that it's the culture.
Back in the day when food was scarce, folks ate every part of an animal but the schit that came out its rear. So you'd have pig's feet, pig's ear, stomach, intestines, tongue, testicles, the penis, etc, etc. And they got to liking it. And they would save the grease from their last meal to fry and/or flavor their next.
Oh, and you can assume that around that part of Virginia, that you never get served lima beans. You get served butter beans - for obvious reasons.
That's OK. Those country folk keep the UVa cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons well practiced.

Me boys don't mess around with that sushi junk. When my youngest was 4, I would order him salmon roll at the sushi place so I could slowly introduce him to the concept. What concept? He'd peel the raw salmon off and eat only it - leaving all the foo foo stuff on the plate.
That's my boy!
These days my boys implore me to go straight to the fish market where we can get it ourselves and prepare it ourselves. Much fresher that way, and they can pig out until they can't move.

Mmm...
Bug out, kitty!
