I've bought six for around $10.00 over the last couple years.

I gave out one for a referee prize at my last event.

I remember looking all over the place for years and finding one in a used music store in an old mill city. It was like finding the holy grail to me.
With the internet they became much easier to find.
Now they are going up in price as they should.

I didn't know Tuttle stopped selling this book. Or is this particular version with the "China Hand Way" caligraphy on the front an unusual release?

(Not bad for a gaijin, eh? )

It was a hardcover copy. The book is still in print, but only in softcover. That picture on Ebay was taken with the dustjacket removed and I believe the calligraphy is on the front of the hardcover. I'd have to look under the dustjacket but I'm pretty sure that calligraphy is on the cover of my copy of the hardcover (found 20 years ago in a used book store for about $5), so I don't think it is anything unusal. I think the high price is just that the hardcover has become a collector's item.

The kanji is sometimes in silver and sometimes gold.

With collectible books a first edition is always more valuable.

Of course condition is important too.

Used library books are the least valuable.

Ebay selling is a crap shoot. Books that should sell for a large amount may not sell at all, or for much less than expected, simply because the people most interested in it may not be looking on Ebay the week you post it. The most I've made for any one item sold on Ebay is around $120, a plastic model kit and a collection of rare magazines each sold for around that if I recall. The most I've made for a book was around $100. Ex-library books can still do well if they are rare enough, I sold a 2-volume set for around $80 once (and yes, I did say in the listing that it was ex-library).

Out-of-print books do pretty well in general, but actually the best luck I've had selling has been with out-of-print plastic model kits. Rare kits like the old Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, or Baa Baa Black Sheep models from the 70s and 80s; certain sailing ship models; Jacques Cousteau's Calypso or flying plane models from the 70s; etc, generally generate lots of bids and do very well. Like books, the older original kits do better than any recent re-releases that may have come out. Even rare kits missing pieces or partially completed are in demand.

Bought for $7.00 last year

Last year a used book store opening in town so I decided to go check it out. You can find some real treasures in these places (esp., when the dealer doesn't know what he has). A guy I've played chess with in the past once found a book by Bobby Fisher in one of these stores, signed by the author, in good condition and walked out with it for $10!

I picked up this little treasure by GEM for just $7 at the store. Not in in great shape, but better than average.

Yards sales are another great place to find these items... people just don't know what they have.

Same goes for Ebay, people all the time sell stuff they don't know the value of. I keep an eye out for things I'm familiar with being sold cheap, particularly in "Buy it Now" lisitings, and then buy them for myself if they are on my wishlist or turn them around for a profit.

sent me a case of the first printing of the book back in 1962. The hardcover was made of a grass like texture... most unusual and very beautiful. The calligraphy was gold I believe.

I gave them all away, figuring I'd get more later... which I did... however the second shipment contained books with a different cover, more of a fabric. I called Mr. Tuttle about this and he said the original (very small initial printing) cover was too expensive to duplicate, so they changed the cover material for the rest of the first printing.

I've been looking for one of these original books ever since!

Uechi-ryu Karate Do has an interesting history as well. Aside from the fact that far fewer books were printed overall. (the Tuttle book had over 30 printings that I'm aware of) The first printing of Uechi-ryu Karate Do contained a list of all the foreign black belts promoted, beginning with mine in 1958 - 1974. Although I didn't change the book information in future printings, there were actually 3 or 4 editions of the book. I just added material for later printings. The listings of black belts was removed after the first printing/edition as well.

I can't remember how many cover colors there were. The first was yellow and the last was red. I think there was a blue (a small printing) and perhaps one other.

Something for the book collectors to sort out! :)

Based on what is happening to the martial art book market, I would think the most valuable of all books (aside from the Kyhon, will be the special 1st edition hardcover book, signed and numbered. I believe 750 were made and sold out within a couple months.

Yep...and my brother got one (its mine I know it is lol)
I know I seen another in the kit bag of a Uechika...racking my brain to recall whom (Dartmouth NS student I think)
Unfortunately the high turnover of Karate students causes books to vanish as well

Didn't know you had a blue version of Uechiryu Karatedo, George.

FWIW... I have a partial box of the reds. I'm not yet sure what I'm going to do with them.

I have one of those hardcovers, George. It's still in mint condition. I have a yellow as well.

You really should spend some of that "retirement" time taking what prints you have left to make another edition. The problem with books getting rare is that you feel guilty opening them up any more. They almost get too valuable to use.

Just out of curiosity, who got the Charlie Earle version of the film of Uechi Kanei? I believe his copy is probably in better condition. Bob Galeone used to tell me how he'd sneak into Charlie's office when he wasn't around and hold impromtu viewing sessions.
