Jim
I never realized you were a "grand student" of Ted Kresge. He's quite the "enigmatic" character.
It's a shame you didn't have a chance to learn from some other sources. Ted got mega intense in a kind of martial something, and then gave it all up for Jesus. Unfortunately it left a lot of people without good instruction.
Interesting guy though... These days his Christmas light shows are legendary.

Yet another one. What load of horse manure.
I hold black belt ranks and over 20 years experience in both karate and judo/jiujitsu. Karate is effective in the context for which it was developed - to defend oneself against armored samurai who carried swords. Most styles of karate (95%, at least) have not drastically changed their curriculum to accomodate for folks who are not wearing 50-80 pounds of armor and are not carrying swords. If these styles had changed with the times, their techniques would look more like boxing or muay thai.
Additionally, most (95%) karate styles and classes I've seen do not practice full contact. Therefore, they never get the chance to hone their techniqes against attackers who are moblie, and resisting. Judo & Jiujitsu do just that. So teach these karateka how to sprawl. But their lack of adapting their techniques at full power and full speed against a resisting attacker will make it very difficult for them to defeat a similarly trained judoka / jiujitsu man / muay thai practicioner / boxer.
And to further agree with Sasae as to the point of karate going away as an art for adults - that is exactly why Funakoshi made the changes to the art that he did - to make it better for kids. Karate is great for kids. Then, somewhere between age 12-15, depending on the child, they should switch completely over to Judo, BJJ, and or Muay Thai.
Unfortunately, I don't think it will ever go away completely for adults... the media and movies have hyped it too much. And there are just enough disillusioned out there that will believe anything they are told.
I love that myth. First it was Itosu around 1900 that had started teaching karate in one of the middle schools on Okinawa. From what I understand Funakoshi started out teaching university students not pre-teens. Does the writer ever say why someone should move over to Judo, BJJ or Muay Thai? And to further agree with Sasae as to the point of karate going away as an art for adults - that is exactly why Funakoshi made the changes to the art that he did - to make it better for kids. I was dreaming of the past...
Oh dont be so hard on him.
In a way he's right, lots of uechi jokers messing up a good style.
But that said, though bad uechi is popping up, there is ten times as much bad wing chun, though once again, not because of the styles lack, but the people mess it up.
Here is proof of wing chuns deficiency.
Dont worry, uechi is also blasted by bullshido, though in a 'karate' thread and not just single styles of karate.

I didnt want to stoop down low enough to dig up crap against another style, and i know ill end up pissing off Jim as well, while it isnt my intent. Just trying to prove that by saying muay thai is infinitly more powerful then uechi-ryu in every way is rather strange coming from a guy who studies an art with a reputation just as bad as karate.

Pretty funny, no? Alas for the no touch KO folks, it's just an interesting genetic deflect (sic).
Some of it (like a recent poodle shown on TV) represents a severe case of narcolepsy. The poodle in question would fall asleep - quite literally - whenever it got excited. However I believe these goats represent the "opposum" response. "Playing possom" basically means going vasovagal (loss of blood pressure) due to extreme fright.
