Gi Suggestions

Post by Kevin Guse »

Anyone have any suggestions for a traditional Karate gi. I just ordered one (Ronnin Brand) and it is nice material but wow are those sizing charts/their advice off!!!! It is so huge it is like trying to move in a fake summo outfit.

I would like a Gi that is not too big, medium weight(10-12oz), comfortable for all around Karate practice(allowing for all athletic movements) and durable.

Also it would be nice to keep the price under a $100.

Any suggestions for brands, styles and where to purchase????

Thanks.

I used to pay about 40-50 bucks for a medium weight canvas Century gi or an Iron Man. We'd buy them a little big and take them to a tailor to have them fitted properly. Wasn't very expensive and you could get them just the way you wanted.

I've been pleased with my Meijin Champ.

As for sizing, I found the pants HUGE when I got them, so I did exactly what they said NOT to do and shrunk them down to something reasonable (it was amazing). The top already fit me fine, so I took care not to shrink it.

Thank you guys.

Those Meijin Champs do look nice if I can get a good size to shrink and I will look for a tailor if all else fails.

I am with G.E.M. on this one that all these Gi's are so big and heavy. I know some people like them that way but to me it is so restricting in your movements not to mention you can't keep your pants up when they are 10in to big around the waist.

Anybody else know of other options?

The pro force kumite gi is a pretty decent deal.
http://www.awma.com/index.cfm/action/pr ... /11227.htm

The 45% polyester makes it less see through than other 8oz gi and gives it a sturdier feel.

Can't really beat it for $25.

That is a good deal, and I've used Pro-Force twice for gi pants and the stuff wasn't bad.

Sometimes we forget that what we're buying is workout clothes and not something to wear when we visit the Queen.

Juka silver might be a good gi for you. Very close in quality to a shureido, and the silver about the weight your talking about. Gold is a heavy shureido type.
This is the website http://www.gatewaytotheorient.com/index.php
But I don't see the Juka on it I know they have them, you'll have to call.

Most of the time I wear a $10.00 junk gi, but I do use these for tests etc...
Since a Shureido is over $200 retail, this at less than half that is a nice deal.
I think meijin will embroider the Uechi kanji on theirs, which is also a nice deal.

I just dislike the customer service at AWMA and Century so I wouldn't even look at them personally.

Hi Fred,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with AWMA as they have always been great with me and a lot of my students go with the Pro Force line - some very good values there in the mid weight cotton blend lines.

The Bold Look also has some good Gis at decent prices.

Call me snobby but I love my Shureido Super Gi's - Yes they are pricey but the fit is always great, I can wash them in hot water and dry them on high and they come out of the dryer looking like they just came from the dry cleaners, with no shrinkage. I have 7 of them including my first one that is over 10 years old!

My wife and daughter use the Juka Diamond and the Jukado Primos. For Judo or Ju Jitsu stay with the Primo, you won't be sorry. But with the primos, order 1 size larger than normal. The pants run small.

Thanks to all. Great responses.

In the future I'll trust the ones with experience more than ones selling the gi.

I will check into one of these when I return from summer camp!

Gi Question

Post by Topos »

I remember in 1960 when GEM showed us photos from his stay in Okinawa pictures of the pre-Gi era when the Uechi students wore native loin cloths. Sure beat the heat of a hot Gi, fit well too.

Are there Uechi purists out there who want to get back to their roots? Figuratively, of course.
