A Florida man with ties to suspected Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot and killed by a federal agent in Orlando early Wednesday while being questioned about a 2011 triple murder, according to federal law-enforcement officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Ibragim Todashev was a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev and was being questioned by an FBI agent and two Massachusetts State Police officers "when a violent confrontation was initiated by" Mr. Todashev. An FBI agent, "acting on the imminent threat posed by the individual, responded with deadly force," the FBI said.

Surprised? If so, why? If not, why?

Maybe they failed to search him properly, and he had a weapon of some sort. Or he was trying to acquire the FBI agent's firearm by force. Lastly, the FBI probably has fewer restrictions on use of force than the police who were present at the scene.

There's also what's probably a scar on his left shoulder, but didn't think a lot about that. His nose looks pretty greasy with the flash, too, but I didn't think that was particularly relevant either.

I think that's his collarbone, Justin. The picture is very high contrast, so you can't tell for sure. But the lines are symmetrical, so I take the diagonal lines (matching collar bones) as suggesting a somewhat slouched posture.

Nose may or may not be greasy. We know the picture is contrasty. But that proboscis definitely got broken pretty badly at least once.

What are you potentially dealing with? (It isn't being widely reported.) Did you suspect it when you started the questioning? How do you respond?

I am. By all accounts, he wasn't a boxer. He was however a mixed martial arts practitioner.

According to Ms. Manukyan, Mr. Todashev lived in the Boston area from 2008 to 2010 before moving to the Atlanta area a few months after their marriage in July 2010. She says she and her husband moved to the Orlando area in 2011, in part because he had friends there and it was a better place for the mixed-martial-arts fighting Mr. Todashev practiced.

Accounts are still unclear as to what happened. Many speak of him lunging at an FBI agent with a knife. Others speak of him being tailed daily after having a computer seized. Mr. Todashev also had retained a lawyer for a separate "parking lot incident." He's also now a suspect in a triple murder in Waltham on 9/11/2011.

My point was the mindset of people dealing with him. A first glance should send signals that this person was accustomed to going toe-to-toe with others. Broken nose from being hit... cauliflower from mat burns... he also allegedly was limping from recent knee surgery. Add in the recent "parking lot incident" for which he needed to retain a lawyer, and you're painting an interesting picture.

Was the shooting justified? We weren't there. Should we be surprised that it happened? Probably not, for any number of reasons.

Should you notice his capacity for violence with a quick glance? Probably.

The whole thing sounds a little weird to me, but yeah, we weren't there. It seems strange that a dude in custody being questioned by 3+ police officers had to be shot, but stranger things have happened. More's the pity, since it's going to fuel conspiracy theorists. "Oh sure, he confessed verbally and was about to sign the written confession when oops he got shot. More like Obama and his martian allies (what do we really know about the curiosity rover?) wanted to shut him up to keep The Truth about the marathon bombing a secret."

I don't believe any of that (except the part about the curiosity rover and aliens) but it's a shame that it looks so superficially dubious.
