FTP/ HTTP and other web protocols

Post by Dakkon »

Been reading through the Video Threads.
Would like to define some terminologies and what not.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol, Standard ports are 20 & 21.
HTTP: HyperText Transfer Protocol. Standard port is 80
HTTPS: HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. Standard port is 443

Most if not all companies run a "Firewall/Proxy" to allow access to the internet. The main reason is access* control. MIS departments generaly only allow HTTP (port 80) HTTPS (port 443)access.
This is for your safety and theirs. You will have little or no say in changing firewall/Proxy settings. Won't get into MIS/Firewalls any further as this is a companies directive.
You can type ftp://ftp.download.com/ in your browser at work and it may or may not work as the protocol you invoked is running ports 20/21.
If it does work you MIS depart allows FTP access. If not they don't.
Do this at home and it should work.
