Streaming Video Help Needed
Hi folks, it's me again. I'm still working on this streaming video. More so for us low end users (speed wise) for now. Soon, I will have the super clear high speed (320x240) stuff up (assuming all goes well). Judging by the way Tony and Chuck were able to see the first video posted with no problems, then dsl and cable users are gonna love this stuff.
Anyway, the following are 2 clips, each 1 minute in duration. They are the same clips saved at different compressions for different speeds. I know the quality sux. What I am trying to do is elevate the quality as best I can without too many (if any) buffering stalls. In other words, get a consensus for 28k & 56k users for the best possible quality for these users.
I truly appreciate any feedback you can give me.

Tony,
The CD should arrive by tomorrow. The quality for the dsl/cable version of this clip is 1000% better. Almost as good as the original avi. (Can't to an mpg to asf. Have to convert the mpg to avi, then avi to asf as you'll see when you get the cd. Your mpgs became asf's.
I have no idea if it will work on Macs. Any Mac users out there try these?
Allen,
Thanks. I would love to do this stuff for a living. All I need is money, a good camera, a better computer, and a "career". (I hate my actual job
)
Are you using a 56k modem? If so, did you encounter any buffering pauses during either clip.
Scott
PS - Yes folks, that is Tomoyose sensei in that clip. It was taken from Sensei Marilyn Fierro's Taking Charge show. I make mpgs and avis for the video portion of the Taking Charge website. It was from a show she did of the Okinawan masters when they visited the U.S. last year.

Tony,
I use MGI Video Wave to convert mpg's to avi's. You just load in the mpg and output to avi. E-mail me for further details.
Here is a sample asx code. Substitute <> for {} - (use notepad or some other simple text editor)
{ASX version="3"}
{Entry}
{ref href="http://home.earthlink.net/~scotttd/tc_promo.asf"/}
{/Entry}
{/ASX}
That's all the code. No HTML headers.
That's all the code you need. There is more code to put in the name of the clip, author, copyright, etc.
Now save this as "filename.asx". This is the file you will use as a link - ie: NY_JETS_RULE.com/filename.asx
That will kick off the asf file specified in the asx file.
BTW: I think you are really gonna like that CD. There is a clip I made using captured pics of this site I think George would really like as well.
I tried to write and asx to the ftp. It may only work through http. Will work on it later.

Hello Scott.
Am using a Supra Express 56K modem under Windows 2000 with a high-end video card.
It was JPEG quality, but the entire reel of film played smoothly without a pause.

Ok, here's the deal (so it seems) you have to reference the .asf file from an http inside the .asx file. It will not work from ftp. Why? I haven't a clue. Can the ftp site here be accessed as an http?
I took the .asf file and put it under one of my AOL names. I put the .asx file on my earthlink space. It looks nice (probably for higher access modems though.) The clip looks great compared to what I put up but it stalls a lot for my modem.
How about everybody else?
How does it look?
How does it play?
What are you using?

BTW: The .asf is 1/10 the size of the avi.

Tony,
Just the .asf files.
Once we get a consenses on the different quality/access issues, we'll know how many different ones to make. You'll see what I mean probably by tomorrow. The CD contains the original avi, and asf's of different quality.

The kata would be better if the practitioner didn't stop so many inappropriate places, ahem.

Scott San,
I just got Video Wave and the Imagine 128 capture device...I am having too much trouble converting to mpeg to edit. Does it save and work the same as an avi, I never worked with this format. And will it play on all machines?

Evan,
I use mpeg's with MGI only as source files. I always output as an avi. You can mix mpg and avi on the storyboard. I do not like MGI's mpg output. The quality is pretty sad. I use a freeware program that converts avi's to mpgs and a does a pretty good job. You can download it from here: http://www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1/
All video clips should work on machines properly equiped with the right video card and drivers. The machine will also require a good video player. I recommend Windows Media Player for avi's and mpegs. As far as Macs, I wouldn't know.
Hope that helps,
Scott

Evan,
Here's an update you can do... MGI also saves files as MOV files. Though I haven't tried it yet, these are quicktime files that will play on both MAC's & PC's. Quicktime is actually licensed from Apple. You set up how you want the output before you build your final clip.
If you run into any problem let me know and I'll see if I can figure it out at my end.
