So your daughter/wife/girlfriend/sister/friend mentions to you that they've started boxing.

I'd tell them to rent the movie, "Girl Fight", and to go for it if they really want it.

Ok.
That's all good. Women want to fight and I love it.
One of the nagging questions in my mind is can repeatedly getting hit in the chest cause, or at least make a woman more prone to, breast cancer? Is this a prime target for woman vs. woman?
I haven't a clue to the above, but have been real curious for years.

Ya know, I've got the same question. Doesn't seem like the occasional punch could do any more damage than wearing under-wire bras on a daily basis. (hate those things)
I mean it kinda makes sense that breasts are not built to be hit - they're mostly fatty tissue and glands - not really what one would consider to be impact absorbing.
But I've never seen anything research-based that says there is a direct link between breast cancer and getting hit in the chest.
If anyone knows better please chime in.

quote:
Dana Scott, who trains fighters at San Francisco's Gorilla Sports, agrees. She compares today's female fighters to Rocky Marciano and Jake "the Raging Bull" LaMotta.
"Women fighters are like big brawlers that need to prove a point," says Scott. "They started out older, so they've missed a lot of the training, a lot of the finesse and artistry. But that will change as they gain experience and female fighting develops a wider audience."
Scott is overseeing the construction of a new boxing ring inside one of Gorilla's facilities, and she can foresee a time in the next two years when local gyms stage regular intramural bouts.

And Exerpt from today's SF Chronicle Magazine article.

I think of telling her to please not use the training as the license to start acting stupid and picking fights with mean people. Don't think that you can now go toe to toe with a large Bar Rat. And I tell her to pick up Peyton Quinn's books.
Same thing I'd tell my son.
Of course, the ladies in my PARTICULAR family don't need boxing lessons. They already can protect themselves. That's why you don't see me talking trash to any of them. They live by the motto of If-I-Can't-Beat-Him-I-Will-Beat-Him-While-He-Is-Sleeping. I can still feel the shoe my sister hit me with when I was a kid. Thank God I knew some karate or I'd have been knocked out.
