Sorry this isn't Martial Arts relared but I think some of you will want to know about this. Besides the sign says all subjects welcome.
When I arrived at work today I heard people talking about a Bill in the Senate requireing gun registration. In short, from what I have read the IRS wants us to register our handguns so they can tax them. I could be misunderstanding this but the jist of it is the IRS wants to know who owns handguns. WHY? DID SOMEONE HEAR A BACKDOOR OPEN?!!!!
I was hopeing this was just a rumor. Its not. I went to the US Senate web site and found it. S. 2099 was introduced by Sen. Reed from RI.
What do you think about this?

I think you need to check more closely with the NRA-ILA and GOA alerts. This bill is (currently) a non-issue and fits right in with other bills that get introduced just about every session... like a bill to repeal the 2nd Amendment.

THANKS FOR THE TIP. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.

Mooney-san,
The bill in question was/is introduced by Senator Reed from RI... It wouldn't need the complete normal process as you've come to expect from the gun-grabbers. It would amend an existing law to achieve their aims. That law slipped through before any of us were born and was the NFA '34. This bill would add "handguns" to the definition of "destructive devices", thus creating the requirement that they all be taxed ($50.00 each) and registered in the same manner as fully automatic machineguns and certain other devices are currently registered. In other words, it's a defacto back-door ban. There are too numerous problems with it to mention, not the least of which is logistics.
Compromise presupposes that the other side has something to give in return. On the issue of gun-control, the gun banners have nothing to offer in return. Ergo, lawful gun owners get screwed (PERIOD). The current situation of fighting defensively against legislation that is misrepresented and misreported by the grabbers and their shills in the mainstream media is no longer acceptable. No Compromise is the only response and repealing laws is the only goal. In Massachusetts, Carla Howell is running against Ted Kennedy. She's a Libertarian and will go to Washington with an eraser! That is the choice that needs to be made.

Hi:
The legitmate gun owner always get the short end of the stick.
HAndguns, in effect, as well as all firearms all are registered on sale by the dealer, if he wants to keep his license.
As pointed out, the manufacturers are taxed per gun, we pay the sales tax.
At present, the IRC has no provision for taking "personal property".
However, it should be noted that Mass. Municipalities have the authority to tax any PERSONAL PROPERTY. Most do not. Boston does, BArnstable does.
Now we here live in a state that outlaws "jumpropes".
(ie: two pieces of wood tied together by a rope or chain-meaning "nunchaku or 'clacker sticks')
to the best of my knowledge no JUmprope owner has yet been prosecuted.
This seems to be because our police seem more intelligent than the drafters of that particular piece of Legislation.
If you want the cites, I will get them.
I should also put them on "martial arts and the Law".
JOHN

But don't always count on that...
No need for cites... but it does sound like a good subject for the martial arts and the law forum. While you're at it you might as well point out that with some pieces of cardboard, duct-tape, and a crayon, one can build a bonafide "assault weapon" according to the Massachusetts legislation. Oh, and those giant water squirters... those actually fit some of the technical requirements as well.
