Now how did I forget Gojushiho/Ueseishi sho and dai?

Many Shorin styles do versions of these.

Wonderful kata that it is, it is said to contain many secrets of Okinawan combat. It is also said to be a Chinese form, Take your pick.:-)

Robb,

Sensei Kim has not taught regularly for a number of years. He turned the Y classes over to Sensei Leung a long time ago and SenseiLeung had to quit due to severe arthritis.

He is still active at seminars though.

He taught us Gojushiho but without the "drunken" moves, which I just heard about...I think I know which techniques would lend themselves to a drunken interpretation but I don't know for sure. Some of the club members that have set themselves to continuous practice of every kata he has taught are doing over 80 kata...regularly.

The Wan series may be Tomari kata but we link them to the Gojusho and Nijushiho kata as from one of the Crane systems in China.

Kusanku & Sochin:

Thanks for making me feel better about the Gojushiho. It is a wonderful kata, and since I've been known to stagger and fall down in the course of jogging, a kata well suited to my physical temperment.

Sochin:

If you run into Mr. Kim, please express my thanks for his encouragement many years ago. Also, I take it the class at the Y is still going. May visitors drop in? If so, what are the days and times?

Oh, and one last thing. 80 KATA. For a Uechi guy who has trouble remembering 8, this seems like a feat of memory magic. Peace.

Karate Kid,
There is a video set that is out that will answer your original question in regards to the difference between the three main Okinawian styles. It is called Okinawa Karate, 3 main schools of Okinawa Karate.
It was originally produced on main land Japan as a documentry for TV. It has been translated into english and is a must for anyone interested in Okinawian Karate. The two tapes go into the uniqueness of all threee styles and has some of the most respected Sensei's of each style performing kata, discussing fundamentals and a bunch more.
Here's where to get the videos. Any questions please let me know.
