Restless Nights

Post by Syd »

Being somewhat new to the forum . I don't know if this has ever been discussed. My wife has brought to my attention . I seem to be acting out Kata / sparring in my sleep . Her comment : Your not easy to sleep next too . I'm sure daily work frustration is a contributing factor. Has anyone experenced similar ( NIGHT Moves ) as I refer to them. Any advise , Besides your a nut job are welcome .

Restless Nights

Post by LenTesta »

I do it all the time Image

Especially after two gruelling hours of Van's TC Class, when I finally do wind down enough to fall asleep.

I very often wake up alone while my wife sleeps on the couch.

Once she tried to push me out of bed but I fought her off in my sleep never waking up to know what I was doing. She doesn't even try that anymore, she just gets up and leaves me to flail away by myself. Once I banged my head into the headboard so hard I almost had a concussion. I awoke in the morning with a bump on my head and a very sore neck.

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I remember dreaming that I was fighting, but most of the time I do not remember if I was even dreaming.

I do know that it happens frequently when I am over tired and can not get to sleep quick enough, or when I go to bed after having a few too many cocktails or beers.

Other than knocking of the late night drinking, I have no remedy or cure though.

If you or anyone else can find one I would love to hear it.

Lenny,

Banging your head into the headboard? My-my!

The TC moves in mysterious ways. Image

Have your wife tie you up! Image

Seriously, those fast twitch fibers are being born.

Perhaps the person best qualified to speak to this would be Paul Giella. He may stop by to comment.

My understanding is that this is probably a combination of factors. First of all, some people are more active (talkative, whatever...) in their sleep than others. We all manifest different brainwave activities a bit differently. Dreaming - as I understand it - is basically your mind "wandering" about in its thoughts without doing anything particularly productive. If you are stressed or have a lot on your mind, you may find yourself to be more "active" than at other times.

I think you may find that this will get better over time. Karate being something new and fresh may cause it to dominate your "random thinking" during REM sleep. When it becomes something more normal, you MAY find that the activity subsides.

Try resting more, managing your stress, varying consumption of alchohol, caffeine, different foods, etc. You may find that certain situations, foods, levels of stress, legal drugs, etc may affect this one way or another.

Good luck to you - and especially your spouse. Image

On a serious note, just remeber that there are such things as sleep disorder labs that you can go to if ever this becomes something that affects you negatively (like your wife will leave unles...). But otherwise if everyone is cool about it and finds a way to deal with it, I'd chalk it up to just being...unique. We all are in our own ways.

Susan has Tia sleeping between us! Ever tried fighting with a Pitbull while sleeping?

Whenever I start moving around too much, Tia wakes up and licks my face!

Now this really brings back memories.

Long, long ago I was undergoing a period of intense training, running, classes 7 days a week and very regular competition, and being younger only sleeping 2 1/2 hours a night.

One night I went to bed and I guess I began a fight in my sleep. At some point I snapped my body over 180 with a hook punch right into my wife's eye.

Not exactly the best way to maintain harmonious marital relations <grin>!

But when I backed off training at that level, I discontinued my nocturnal fighting habit, too. This is the first I've ever seen anyone else experience this.

Mike,

You're obviously not alone. Image Here's a very closely related topic in Van sensei's forum:

One of my former martial arts instructors was a bit of a martial maniac. He started with judo as a child, then Mas Oyama style (kyokushinkai ryu), then Goju (initially with young Yamaguchi, then Kimo Wall), then aikido, etc, etc. He became a green beret and taught fighting methods to the recruits. I believe he did time in Vietnam, and I know he "offed" a few people in his military career. During a training session one time where it was just the two of us, he intimated that he had been upset that his wife (whom he dearly loves and gave him many children) wasn't more cuddly when they slept at night. Turns out he was suffering a bit from this syndrome you spoke of. He was still just a little too combat ready - even in his sleep. Anyhow, he mellowed a bit as a civilian, found religion (became a devout Seventh Day Adventist) and all worked out in the end for him.

True story:

About 22 years ago my first wife rolled over in her sleep and hit me across the bridge of the nose with a backfist - this before she started any martial arts training!
Image

I woke up - grabbed her wrist...

and corrected her backfist, the way it was cocked, putting the thumb on the outside rather than inside, and told her to use to the two large knuckles.
Image

And I rolled over and went back to sleep.

I truly do appreciate all this imput, and it is great to know I'm not alone. I do come from a military background. My wife has told me, it's been ten years of this defensive sleeping for her. The night she sat me down was the morning after a 1 hour dynamic tension class ( Sanchin ). I thank all of you , and can relate to all scenario's, that last one was great , from Student . Thanks
