Video Magazine #10

Post by cashodan »

Hi all,

I was just revieiwing the Video Magazine #10 ( with Kanei Uechi demonstrating some kata and some clips of some classes somewhere on Okinawa) with a friend and noticed in some of the clips a black Uechi practitioner. We think it might have been Julius Scott or possibly Fred Norris, the problem is we have only seen a very few pictures of Julius Scott and none of Fred Norris and as far as we know those were the only 2 black practitioners on the island training around that time (circa 1965-1968).The reason we'd like to know is becaouse our Sensei has been one of Sensei Scotts students since he was about 6 years old (being in his mid-30's) so they were relatively close to say the least and since Sensei Scott passed last year we had thought it would be a mitzvah if we could a)verify that that is indeed Julius Scott and/or b)find anymore footage of Sensei Scott to share with our Sensei.
So if anyone knows anything it would be greatly appreciated.

Ben, Another possibility..The indivdual could very well be James Thompson --the other Uechi Ryu pioneer-- Jim spent a total of ten years on Okinawa from very early 60's to middle 70's when he wasn't doing tours in Viet Nam.

I've been on Okinawa while Jim was there. The person in question was not Jim Thompson or Fred Norris.

Thanks, the info is much appreciated. Looking back I must have forgotten about James Thompson, I had heard about him before but never really knew when he was in okinawa. Again, thank you both.
