Seirui and Sai?

Post by RickLiebespach »

I recently heard that seirui was originally performed with sai....does anyone know anything about that?
Also, as a result, I am now looking to get a pair of sai, while I'm at it, maybe a tonfa too? Does anybody know what the correct measurments would be for Sai and Tonfa?
Also,
What are the pros and cons of the various styles of sai and tonfa?
and,
What are the pros and cons of the various manufacturers/retailers and materials of sai and tonfa?

Seirui and Sai?

Rick,

If you really want to do Uechi kata while flipping a pair of Sais around, I'll mail you the chapter on doing just that from my first book, "The American Uechi-ryu Handbook" that has instructions on how to work the sais using Uechi kata as a vehicle for doing so. If I can find a copy of the tape my wife took of me doing that kata in a tournament, I'll send it along too. You have to remind me in a month or so because the overtime just got turned on again at work last week.

The chapter is on CD somewhere...

Hi Rick,

Your comment about seirui having possibly originated from a sai kata is very interesting, because it does so strongly resemble Matsugawa no Sai kata. Any further info?

I've never heard this. I will tell you that a FEW movements would have to be modified, but many Uechi forms frankly have elements that could be done with a sai. As I've told my people, a sai is a shoken with attitude.

The proper length for a sai or tonfa is to have it extend beyond your elbow by about 1 cm. The rationale is that it must protect the whole forearm without being unwieldy, and it must be capable of giving attitude to an elbow thrust (particularly to the side or back).

Tonfa measures just an inch or so past the elbow, I don't believe there is an exact measurement, they are inexpensive.
