So, what are you doing during the holidays?

Post by Bill Glasheen »

Are you enjoying your holidays? Good.

Taking time away from martial arts for a little? That's fine.

What else?

Eating all that holiday food put in front of you? Remember, you DO have a choice. Look hard enough, and there's often good food at any party and gathering. Many people now have veggie munchies at parties. You can drink all the soda water you want, and not gain a pound (of weight that you can't pee off). Many holiday meals have good food choices like turkey, vegetables, and even a slice of pumpkin or sweet potato pie with lots of beneficial carotenoids.

One of my former mentors - strength coach and former world heavyweight powerlifting champion John Gamble - used to talk about the concept of active rest. He had me write out a WHOLE YEAR of training on a schedule. One of the things he told me to do was to take a break now and then. But he emphasized the word ACTIVE in the phrase "active rest."

Active means you can hit the ski slopes instead of the dojo. Just don't pull a Sonny Bono on us.

Active means you can swim indoors instead of hitting the dojo.

Active means you can take long walks outside, or toss a football. You can even play some pickup basketball, but remember that martial arts is safer when it comes to the knees and ankles... ;)

Active means you can be "active" with your significant other. Hey, don't you know that half the people that train hard do so for vanity? Time to cash in!

Active means you can invest time in relationships that allow you to spend all that time in the gym for the rest of the year.

Active means you can expand your horizons by reading about new things, seeing interesting films, traveling to places, etc.

So, what am I doing tonight? I'm going to the gym. But in the last two weeks, gym time has been different, and intentionally so. My last weight training cycle ended just before Christmas. It's fun time now.

Happy holidays.

Skied and snowshoed for the past five days.
Got in a run and some lifting at the gym.
No martial arts for 5 days.

And the skiing didn't get Mr Kennedy, it was the football distraction.
Kind of like playing wiffleball while sparring.

I've been maintaining my training with two or three workouts a week and supplementing with sea kayaking.

Post thanksgiving day, went out with a group in building storm conditions. Some over-confident kid (who didn't tell anyone he was a newbie) went literally over his head in "conditions" and had to be rescued. He thought his "pool roll" was up to snuff and would carry him though the lack of experience... Nothing like flipping over in wind driven waves near surf (and man) breaking rocks to to put the fear of God in him. He blew his roll and wet exited into ice cold frothy water -- a sharp awakening to mortality. We rescued him and escorted his butt back to launch. As the kid said, "I learned a lot today..." He also has much to be thankful for. There's a lesson there. :)

Christmas Eve day - out in the middle of Boston Harbor, paddling against wind driven waves. Beautiful sunshine but not another boat/ship in sight. We're on our own. My paddling partner is flipping over and doing hand rolls in the cold water. I kept my paddle in the hands, thank you. He was the perfect paddling partner. Being deaf, there's no talking. Just some minimal hand signalling. Basically, we're together but almost each on our own. Self-reliance was the key since we if trouble hits we cannot count on being able to communicate with each other. We each had our own thoughts, wind, waves, sunshine and eternity stretching from where water meets the sky.

New Year's Day paddle - Like a paddle in the pond. No wind or waves and a good contingent with five experienced folks and two novices. One of the novices wanted "conditions" to test himself. In due time... Yesterday was just the first day of the year. Ice cold water that will linger til late spring. Nary any pleasure boaters out. The conditions will get rougher. He'll get his "testing." Hopefully, he have an "out" if he finds his skill lacking in the conditions set by Mother Nature. The sea is alluring, beautiful and moody. She is big and indifferent to whether we ride her or sink below into her cold embrace...

T'was a good year. It's good to be alive in the new one. :)

Its a little different for me. Being at college most of the year, any trip home is a chance to get to the dojo whenever possible. So I don't take a break at home or on break. But, over break, my training methods definately shift. Much less time in individual workouts, more with the group. A very nice change of pace. And a very necessary time to brush up my kumites and bunkais.

David,
What kind of Kayak you riding in? Must be an ocean one 15' or so.
I have a general purpose one as I like to run rivers up in Vermont, nothing too crazy 12' gets me around okay.

Fred,

My current ride is a "Greenland Style" low volume boat -- 17.5' length and 20" beam, a hull depth of about 7", and an "ocean cockpit" of 16"x20". You have to squeeze into this baby and know you're not going to wet exit in rough conditions. If one wet exits in rough conditions, the chances of successfully reentering and pumping the boat are pretty minimal. So, like the Greenland motto says -- "Roll or die." The boat itself (not me) can handle just about most conditions short of a hurricane. Been out in Nor'easters with 30 knot plus winds, waves and driving sleet/snow. The boat does fine though I get tired and a bit "edgy" when that happens.

I have a white water boat on tap. I want to explore the "dark side," as white water rapid running is called.

I find kayaking a good complement to martial arts. Develop and refine skills, stamina and ability to perceive and interpret a situation. Get out in progressively tougher conditions. reevaluate and refine some more. When out, just do. Don't think too much. Mistakes can be costly. When everything goes well, it's a flow. When it doesn't... Well, accept everyone has their finite time and place... Just make sure you have good life insurance. ;)

Let's get together when the air and water temps are warmer. I have another oean boat you can fit -- 15.5' x 23.5", hull depth of 13.5" and with a sprayskirt that should also fit you. It's a pretty stable but seaworthy boat. I paddled New Years Day from Hingham Harbor out to some of the islands. Again, it was very placid that day. But belying that, was the real danger of ice cold water -- immediately incapacitating for those not prepared.

David,

How do you keep from freezing to death? I haven't touched my kayak in a month.

Into The Storm...

dressed for immersion.

I had a goretex drysuit on that day with layers of fleece and thermax underneath. My helmet was not on but there in the boat. My buddy Jay, is an ex-Ranger officer, and currently on staff to Army Research Lab in Natick. He liaises with troops in the field to get on the ground feedback on equipment. He had on an "experimental" drysuit of some classified material purported to be better than goretex in breathability/waterproofness and durability.

His suit worked fine. Unfortunately, not much after this photo was taken, Jay got dumped in the surf (can't tell from the photo but the waves were up to 6 feet). Already hobbled with a sprain knee, he blew it out on a bad roll and wet exited. Made a swim to shore and ended his day and much of the season...

I wish I could say I had a good Holiday like you all.

I think, due to my husband and I selling our vending business over the last couple of months, something had to give with all the stress we have been under with the impending holidays approaching. We worked Christmas eve and took off Christmas day for the family.

This year, I had family over my house for the traditional dinner and awoke Christmas morning with the start of a 'wonderful' migraine. I couldn't call it off because it was too short notice.....so, what a day! Lots of medication and perseverance. I could hardly wait for eveyone to leave and crawl in bed to end my day. Thank goodness my sister also cooked and brought half the meal. I really need to isolate what is causing these darn headaches.

We worked to move out our personal stuff and go through the past years files the rest of the week, looking forward to dinner out with friends New Year's eve for our traditional Chinese dinner at our favorite restaurant in down town Richmond.

Christmas eve was our last day at our office and I had to go in and count $ for our last vbusiness deposit. Once again, I woke up New Year's eve morning with a tight headache between my eyes and sick to my stomach. I had to work and, legally, we had to be out be days end.

What a sight that was! I counted the route money and paid deep homage to the porcelain god in between and after each route counting. Oh boy!
By 11 AM I finished, went home, knocked myself out, and stayed in bed until 10:30 Christmas eve....when I finally was able to lift my head and eat something. One good thing, I did get a version of Chinese food late that night when my sweet husband made me Egg Drop soup.

Well, maybe next year it will be better.

Happy New Year, everyone.

P.S. And no Bill, the yacking was truly not from any inbibing...heck, I could't even have my typical coffee for a couple of days, and you know I am a coffee freak.

David: That sounds exciting man! All I ever do is paddle around looking for skunkapes and petting manatees. One day I was in danger of falling out of my boat though... a little fishie jumped into my boat and managed to wriggle into my shorts! Everyone paddled over to my LZ as quickly as they could to see why I was screaming like a little bitch! Ha! Ha!

Maybe, if you come down this year for a visit you can show us how to do the surf thing??

If you time the North river right David theres some almost whitewater on that. I put in at bridge st Norwell once and tried to fight the current which cooks through there.
I have done parts of the Mad River and Winooski up in VT. But no serious white water and gorges as of yet, maybe next summer.
I just have like a $300 cheap kayak but do go out to Grape and dumb stunts like that.
Let me know come march or so and we'll go out to grape or on the rivers.
My old wet suit won't fit anymore, I think it shrank since I was 20.
