Bo training videos?

Post by janine »

Could any one suggest a good Bo training video?
Need to start with the beginners.
Thanks!

There are several out there, but like karate, there are different styles of bo-jutsu (ie different styles of kobudo). Are you training under someone, or just wanting to practice on your own? If the former, then you need to find out what style your instructor teaches and first explore any videos on that style. If the latter, then you can pick whatever style you want to start with.

Tsunami Productions has a good Matayoshi Ryu style kobudo two-video set, featuring Shinpo Matayoshi a few years before he died. Volume 1 of the two videos contains bo training, including two (or is it 3) of the four Matayoshi style bo kata (Shushi no Kon and Choun no Kon...it might also include Tsuken no Kon). This video can be found at:

This link also includes videos on bo training in Yamanni Ryu and Kenshin Ryu kobudo styles. I know I've seen ads for other Yamanni Ryu videos as well. But I know nothing about those two styles or the videos on them.

Mikio Nishiuchi has an 11-volume set of Matayoshi Ryu style kobudo videos produced through Panther video productions, including 2 volumes on bo. I have one of these (Volume 7: Mastering the Bo Part 2...got it for the remaining Matayoshi bo kata, particularly Sakagawa no Kon). It's not too bad. Volume 6: Mastering the Bo Part 1 would be the place for bo beginners to start with this set obviously.

Hope this helps.

bo-training

Post by janine »

Hey Glenn,

Forget my last post-reply. I don't know how to work this thing yet.
Thanks for all the helpful info. Will check it out asap.
I used to be in Uechi-Ryu, but no teacher here in Mt. So I am now training in Shaiu Shu a shaolin art. I will train in the bo alone for my own benefit.
Thanks again for all your help!
