NOT for defense only?

Post by KerryM »

I was watching a documentary the other night- on the Discovery Chanel or Travel chanel- something one of them- The show was called Extreme Ends of the Earth right-

Anyway- in this docu- they were discussing MA's. When they got to the "karate" section-

They had "our" story right- but they claimed that over "in" Okinawa- karate "isn't just for defense only" but is for attacking your opponent with force- "before" you've been called to defend yourself-

It sounded very very much like the "bad guy" from the first Karate Kid movie-

Did I just misunderstand something? Or is the general concensus that karate "isn't" for "defense" only?

:)

Thanks for the opinions and thoughts-

Check out the thread on Van's page regarding "does Uechi always start with a block". Good initial discussion on this topic.

oo thank you I will-

I've actualy talked about that before- that' is one of the "secrets" I try to students excited about. To give another point of view to what could be a rather mudane excersize- eh?

"Inside the circle, are several "strikes" as well- it all depends on what you need at the time."

You know? It's true within any move in Uechi- espescialy in the kata Sanchin. It's so exciting-

Anyway- I will check it out! :)

Hi Kerry:
Likewise; I left my comments on Mr. Van Canna's forum, I saw your thread immediately after posting there!
Please take my comments there as a reply to your post as well.
Nice to hear from you again.

Not sure how historically accurate this is, but in one of the past post(s) (can`t locate it at this time) Kanbun while in Wakayama Compound (Japan), sought out individuals that were attacking Okinawans. I personally like to call this being proactive as reactive in such situations often leaves you a few frames behind to clean up the mess. Of course today we have more than adequate police protection in the free World.
