Using spikes, nail a phone book into a post (or tree). A friend of mine who teaches kung fu (wing chun and 5 animals) uses this method. It's cheap and effective.

There's a detailed way to make one in the "articles" section. At least there was one a few months back.

Shureido makes a very nice one for about $100.

Filling a canvas bag with mung beans (or solid shot, if you really want to beat your hands up) works nicely for iron palm training.
