hi guys this is mills and i have to say i love uechi first and foremost and i wanted to inquire within the forum and see if the experts could help me with a certain situation involving the symbol on this site and i know it sounds silly but i can't even tell you the name of it because i don't know that either..In the store portion of this site I believe it was referred to as a soke maybe or I could be wrong but anyhow i love the symbol with the three blades inside the circle that lies within the octagon..I already have two tattoos one on my right bicep and one on my left bicep but I want to know more about this symbol because I'd love to get this tattoed on my back between my shoulder blades as my final tattoo and a sign of how much i respect uechi..I can tell you when i look at this symbol it makes me think of ok it's an octagon and uechi has eight kata..ok that's one part..then the three blades represent the three conflicts of mind body and spirit and also the three animals of shoalin used in our system being the tiger dragon and the crane this is what i drew from the symbol please if you know what I mean please repsond and educate me on this symbol and it's meaning..
Off the top of my head... The three sickle blade is the symbol of Okinawan Karate. Its meaning is varied... You can read a lot of things into it specific to Uechi Ryu, as suggested. There's also one read into the spaces inbetween the blades, where it's supposed to be a prisoner diving into a fire and taking the two guards with him.
The Octagon was an afterthought added to the original symbol, and does represent the eight kata.
If you go to www.samurai-archives.com and click on "samurai family crests," you will find that it was the crest of the Bessho daimyo (bottom right, first page). This, of course, does not get you anywhere. The Besshos may have adopted the crest for its other meanings. However, you will also find lots of other neat stuff.
Just a thought. One presumes the symbol was adopted and picked up for some reason. If we follow that, and try to bring some meaning from our own training, then there are some interesting ideas that can be brought to the table, possibly from where we are in our own stage of development.
The symbol has been descibed as 'cutting though' and that is appropriate if one considers the speed and lightening release of internal energy.
