wrote a Master's Thesis on Uechi-Ryu which included an excellent Uechi chronology.

Can I pay somebody who has a copy for a photocopy? Or is there an alternative source ... i.e. University Microfilms. I would need the details to order :)

I believe I have this somewhere buried in my stuff. If I find it, I'll get you a copy.

No disrespect to anyone who likes this sort of thing but I like to keep my martial arts physical and if I wanted to write I would be taking a poetry class.

Thesis for promotion to me is an alarming trend, which I disagree with.

Did he write it because he wanted a promotion, or did he write it because he had some new knowledge or perspective of the subject that was worthy of sharing?

I dont know the answer to this question, but I wouldn't be too quick to judge.

Jon Mills Master's Thesis

Post by John Giacoletti »

Mills's Master Thesis was written as a requirement for graduation from a Cornell graduate level course and if I recall correctly it had something to do with a sociology study.

His MA thesis was for a Master of Arts degree and not for a Martial Arts degree. The subject delt with Kanbun Uechi and was not part of a dan grade reqirement.

The study by Jon Mills compiled much factual information about Kanbun Uechi in a historical, academic context and was a groundbreaking study in the sense that he delt with a karate subject in a serious, documented manner and thereby gave significant academic credibility to Uechi-Ryu.

I've lost or lent to another person the copy that I had of the thesis.

And I'm looking for someone who can copy the material for me. :)

From what I understand he spoke fluent Japanese and often interpreted.

Where is he now?

Still training?
