More media fear mongering or legitimate concern for kids?

It always makes me wonder when I read these articles. The first thought that popped into my head was "182 cases in 10 years with millions of athelete hours played doesn't sound like a lot". My second thought was "what is the rate of these incidents among adults in the same period?"

You do seem to see these stories in the news a few times a year, but do they get more focus because there are children involved? I post here because I was hoping Bill and others in the medical science could shed some light on how real this danger may be in the dojo or on our kids playing fields. I don't doubt that kids should be wearing appropriate protection in contact sports, but this article seems to suggest that protective gear may not be enough for children and teens.
