This is what Van told me to do when I first started training with him, as Van uses many of these drills from Sensei Rabesa who I've never had the pleasure to train with. Lots of good stuff in there, really needs to be studied more than once. Would love a companion DVD to show some of those techniques and how they are executed. Hopefully one of these days I'll get a chance to train with Sensei Rabesa.
Looking forward to some great info.

Hi Fred,
Arthur did make a video tape maybe 15 or more years ago. I have a copy somewhere. Though I helped him with it, I really can't remember what it contained. Maybe Art has a copy. All I remember is, as usual, I was one of the demo bags.

I'll see what I can dig up.

Hi Sensei Bill,

You don't have a copy of a book your in?
I'm going to have you and Sensei Rabesa sign mine so it will be worth millions! My daughters can retire on it's sale in 2050.
I also love his book Kumite, fun reading about Van and the other guys tournament days.

Yeah, I have the books Fred,,,and I'm sure I have the video too. I have the books handy but have to look for the video. I remember we had a good time doing it. Do you remember big Glenn Marshall?? Art and I both came, maybe to his chest, 240 lbs. The video started out with Art and Glenn on an elevator, of course it was set up where they had a "short" disagreement. Poor Glenn, he hadn't learned the lesson, never volunteer. Art took him out, gently of course. Glenn was lame for a week.

As I say, lots of fun.
George may have some video's but Art wants to check it out before releasing anymore. I'll find out more.

Funny you should mention that. I very nearly brought my copies to Summerfest last summer to get Art to sign them after the masters' ceremony, but in the end I felt silly and left them at home. Never thought about the money angle, though.

There is much I can write about Rabesa, who even now can break cement blocks with his fists_ but this is really an announcement:

Inducted into the Falmouth Athletic Hall of Fame May 2008

• Graduate of Falmouth High School in 1960

• Lettered in 4 sports – football, basketball, baseball, track

• All conference in football and baseball

• Only athlete to play 4 sports in a school year. Only athlete to play 2 sports during the same season

• Set track and football records for scoring

• Committed only 1 error in 4 years as Falmouth baseball center fielder

• Received football/baseball scholarship to college

Began Uechi-Ryu training after knee injury in college ended football career.

Honored to be in Uechi-Ryu and Falmouth Halls of Fame

In track and field he ran the 100 meters dash in 10 seconds flat_

He set a record in the 220 yards dash_ and the broad jump_

When he joined the Mattson Academy at Columbus Ave _ Boston_ he became my best student of the Sparring class I was running after George gave me permission to start following our experience in the first world karate championship of Chicago.

At the time Art weighed 170 lbs of solid muscle and could bench press 400 lbs. I used him as a Makiwara for back spinning kicks full power to his chest. He would get knocked down, then get up for another, and another, and another…

Soon he was putting out lighted matches I held to the side of my head with a roundhouse kick, besides pounding tournament opponents into hospital emergency rooms.

In one tournament he really took care of a wise ass punk by breaking his leg.

Thanks for the nice intro. One little thing though. I wish I could run the 100 meters in 10 seconds. It was actually 100 yards. Yards - meters? ah what the hell.

You know Fred, my web site --- www.artrabesauechikarate.com ---- covers everything that is in my book "Explosive Karate". There are many more videos covering many more areas of uechi ryu training. I like watching the old me vs. the today me. I'm pretty sure I can hit harder now then in my earlier years. Like wine right?

Arthur and I are in the preliminary stages of putting together a video together.....

Just flipping through my "Explosive Karate" book. I do that with all the projects I've done from time to time. It kind of keeps me grounded in what I teach or write. My very good friend Bill Bauknecht played a major role in this book. You will see him throughout the text, helping me with one photo after another. It's very sad for me when I go over the photo's, because it is when Bill was healthy and strong. It wasn't long after the book was finished when Bill was found to have cancer. He passed away last month after almost twenty years of fighting the disease. You'll spot him in my first book "Kumite" as well. I'm glad he helped me with these projects. Now everyone can see how this warrior really was. Bill was my student, but I learned from him. -----Happy Trails ---Art

"Explosive Karate" was published in 1993. It came nine years after "Kumite" was published. There was another book that was about to get started when I discovered social media. Most of Explosive Karate can be seen on my web site or You Tube. Bob Campbell told me that books are only good for door stoppers. Now , with all these toys to play with, I'm getting my teaching and viewpoints out easier. Bob was right it seems. I still hope that there are those out there that see value in texts. I worked hard putting the two books together, and I'd hate to see that form of expression die. Now, with this forum, I can touch base with many. After almost 54 years in Uechi Ryu , it's nice to finally find an easier way. That way being the media. So if you buy, or have, the F@#$#@g book as Fred C. calls it, thank you. It is instructional, so it needs to be revisited every so often. I go back into my books to see the changes in my training, or viewpoints. I've changed very little. I see things in the style that I overlooked years earlier. That just comes with experience I guess. There is just so much you can do with pictures and narrative. Now, I'm able to get out a short instructional video clip once in awhile. TECHNOLOGY! If a picture is worth a thousand words --- what's a video worth? I'm really "old school" in most things. With all the new ways of reaching viewers, I am slowly leaving the dark side. ------Happy Trails------Art
