Must-see movie

Post by Bill Glasheen »

For a martial artist and/or for a lover of who-done-it novels, this modern treatment of Sherlock Holmes - true to its era, by the way - is more than good. It borrows from some of the artistic license of recently animated Marvel Comics characters in that it plays up a dark and not-so-flattering side of a well-known figure.

Hopefully you've read at least one Sherlock Holmes novel in your childhood. If not... well shame on you and get on it. However that's not entirely necessary to enjoy the film.

Why do I love this movie so much?

Sherlock Holmes Trailer

1) It was one I could enjoy in a father-son outing with my 11-year-old son. Yes we enjoyed Avalon. No, I'm not going to take you to see Legion. Violence as part of history? I'm all for it. Pearl Harbor? Yes. 300? Yes. Maybe a James Bond movie here and there? Sure. Legion? I don't think so.

2) You martial artists will love this. I'd particularly like to hear the reactions from some of our senior-seniors here. It was a very interesting and thoughtful treatment of pugilism - perhaps maybe even a bit on the bleeding edge (no pun intended). It was part James Bond, part Jack Johnson, and part Big Trouble in Little China.

3) I love the mad, eccentric genius. (Hmm... )

4) Indeed there was a woman involved. And what a badass woman she was. Ya gotta love a saucy lass who is the intolerable equal of the bad laddie. ;)

5) Look, ma, NO CHI!!!!! Go see the movie and you'll see what I'm talking about. ;)

Enjoy, and share your thoughts.

Hi Bill,
I think the last time I saw a movie at the theater was when my kids dragged me to Harry Potter 10 years ago, but did you know that House was based on Sherlock Holmes and Holmes was based originally on a doctor?

Has a circular "chi" thing to it doesn't it?

It doesn't surprise me at all, Fred. While the details drive the "real life" Dr. Ian a bit batty at times, House is a show I enjoy watching.

House can be a bit annoying at times the way his group goes around their elbow to get from thumb to pinkie. I'm not so sure I'd want House as my doctor.

The most recent Sherlock Holmes movie however was a bit different. At least half a dozen times during the movie, I bent over to give the "punch line" to my number 2 son a second before Holmes uttered it. The writer did a very good job of putting the clues right there in front of your nose. In fact... the writer taunts you with all the clues you need, and challenges you to solve the mystery before Holmes does. While I wasn't as good as the fictitious Holmes, I did "get" the line of reasoning very well, and had more than a couple of things figured out as the plot evolved.

The writers of House should take note.

Boy that sure sounds like a fun movie-going experience for him! :P

He doesn't mind. He hasn't had chemistry yet, so I was able to explain some of it. I didn't spoil the plot for him.

Plus... we were the only ones in the theater on a Monday night. Boys have only gone to school one day this week with winter break and then a couple of feet of snow. It seems Al Gore's lost glaciers are re-forming in Virginia. :P In any case, we had our own private showing.
