For most healthy people squatting should not cause knee pain. Unfortunately, knee pain torment many people trying to do squats. Healthline has a great article on dealing with issues:

One common cause of knee pain is sitting too much. It may be from poor posture, poor sitting posture and leg positioning, or simply not moving around.
