Tony's Seichin - Clip
Here we go again.
The following clips were created at 160x120 from a 352x240 44 meg avi. The final asf files are MUCH smaller.
I put these clips on AOL's server. They were playing for me, much better.
Please try each one. (even the isdn)
tony's seichin - 28.8
tony's seichin - 56
tony's seichin - isdn
The following zipped file is the isdn version of the .asf file. If you unzip it and save it to your hard drive then play it from there, it will work perfectly. (no buffering pauses) The file is only 799k. Not bad considering the original version was 40 megs. The frames per second were cut in half and the size is smaller but you can get an idea of the quality I am foing for. Plus, the clips of Tony and the people he has video taped with him look pretty cool.
The ASF file zipped
Please tell me what happens and what speed mode/access you are using.
Thank You!
Scott

scott,
28.8 streamed well for me (56 k USR modem) The 56K was better quality, but buffered appreciably more. The ISDN was quite slow (but not as slow as the previous ones).

Tony,
Sounds great. Email me the url so I can start linking when you do. Also, maybe we should put the asx's on there too. But to be honost, I doubt it will make a difference (the asx files that is.)
If they stream better, I'll then work on increasing the viewing size of the clips. I'd like to upload the above asf's to it so we have an EXACT matching file to compare.
Well it looks like we are on the right path now. I only wish you can all see the original avi files. They are HUGE but I was going for the best quality possible to work from.
Thanks all for the input - We can use more from you lurkers out there.

I couldn't get the 28.8 to play at all. I received info that I needed to download a "Media Player Codex 4.0" I checked my version of Media Player & I have 6.0 ... so I wasn't sure why I needed to download this.
Does the browser automatically select Real Player vs. Media Player ... or does it depend on how you create the video?
Thanks, Jackie

Jackie,
If it still wants you to download that codex file go ahead. I believe that is to be able to use media player with ASF files which is this new streaming file format we are working with.

Here you go ...
28.8 -- no buffer pauses, very blurry
56 -- some pauses, less blurry, slightly grainy
ISDN -- many pauses, less blurry , no grain.
zip file --- 4 min 30 sec. to download @2.96kb/sec. No pauses, clearest video
I have a pentium, 233 mghtz, (I know, a dinosaur compared to what you guys have) slow modem -- 36(?) but out here in the country, my phone line rarely transfers anything faster than 26400.
Hope this helps. Jackie

Scott,
Using an HP w/350mhz and a 56K modem. Transfer rate was about 4.6K/sec for the zip. No problem with the 28 or 56, except the quality was not very good (I realize you are trying to find a compromise...). The ISDN paused to buffer fairly often, but the quality was better than the others (seemed equal to the zip). Certainly prefer any of the above to the 'old' way!

Hi Scott - here's my view from a celeron w/56K access:
28.8: very blurry - quick load - no buffering pauses
56: less blurry - quick load - no buffering pauses
isdn: similar quality to 56 - slower load - lots of buffering pauses
zipped file - nicest quality - but didn't seem that much better than the 56.
Hope that helps some.
Nice work! Definitely a nicer way to view these clips.

Hi Lori,
Yes that helps immenseley. Couldn't ask for more. Except maybe more clips of you and Tony working out. I only had that one brief clip to work with. I'm really into this editing stuff. Did Tony show you the CD?
Tony,
Maybe you should do both. This way, I can dl the avi's and produce a montage clip as above, while still letting everybody quickly view your work. I would think it also depends on the length of the file.
The zipped file above is the isdn version.
We can even make cable versions that can play on your own machines. Only you'll have to download them the old fasion way but... they will be compressed to a smaller file so dl time will be much shorter. And when you view them, there will be no buffering.
Tony, maybe you should re-activate the voting booth and make a poll.
