Why do I feel as if I will need a cable modem, Scott?

Allen,

I am looking forward to getting one when it comes in this area. With the way multimedia is going on the web, I predict 3-4 years from now broadband will be a must. Just like 2400 baud was all the rage (way back when) it would be so useless now. Even 28.8 is pathetic.

I started on a 300/1200 baud modem with a commodore 64. 1200 was great. Then Supra made a 2400 that worked with a commodore. Talk about blazing speeds. So I guess you can see where modems are going -> The museum of computer history.

I was concerned about a lack of a firewall with such a setup, because my PC is open to invaders, but when I called to request service this afternoon, I was informed that there is a firewall.

Same price as the dedicated PC phone line I'm replacing, but much faster. As soon as mediaone will host a domain, my other websites are history.

As it is now, Scott, all you have to do is point a little parbola skyward, and there you have it! Can you imagine doing satellite at 300 Baud?

I dunno. I guess it depends what features you want. I haven't fully explored all of 7.0 yet. It will play CD's and mp3's. But winamp lets you convert mp3's to wav which I like to use because I can convert wav's to redbook. A little proccessy (a word?) but I don't have anything that will convert mp3 to redbook.

The beauty I like of 7.0 is it has an equalizer, skins, playlists, radio presets, and a lot more. Plus, modemers can load in (buffer) the higher quality streaming video (off of unix servers like this one). You'll wait a little longer but no where near as long as downloading a 20 meg mpeg. Let's face it, the 56k stuff looks like crap. I do the best that I can tweaking here and there. I think though that it looks a lot better than other 56k stuff I've seen around the web whether it's windows streaming or real media stuff.

I recommend you all ("yall" for you southern folk and "youse" for you New Yorker folk) give it a shot. You can always remove it if you don't like it.

I only have the beta version. It seems like the "properties" do not read yet. I hope this is fixed by the time of the release version. I find this very usefull to determine what codecs were used on certain videos and audio files.
