Forum threads again...

Post by Lori »

Hi Scott and any other UBB tekkies out there...

Tony?

I went into the control panel to edit the title of a new topic. Did this before with no problem. Now, after the upgrade, the UBB sent me a message recommending that I re-index the threads after edit/prune functions because the UBB would not do this automatically.

COOL! I think - because the last time Tony indexed the threads for me I could post to older topics - which I can't again since the upgrade.

So I went to "index" and followed instructions.

Then I got this message:

NOTICE! This request and your user data were logged as a hack attempt. Authorities will be alerted if you persist.

If you believe this to be an error please contact gmattson@uechi-ryu.com to say there may be corrupt data files in Forum 25.

So - you've been notified! And I still can't post to the older threads in my forum... Image

This is the message I get when I try:

Sorry, we could not post your reply to this topic. Contact your bulletin board administrator and inform them that they may have may run out of available disk space. Their web host may be preventing them from posting new files.

Probably the next upgrade will take care of that - or make things worse - who knows! Anyway - this still beats the old forums of a couple years ago! In the meantime - if you can index them again or some such thing as an administrator... Image (You told me to ask!) Image

I updated threads and indexed them. Got that same error message Lori recieved when I got to forum 25 (VSD). Then indexing stopped. I temporarily turned off VSD then indexed again. It went through. I turned VSD back on then did another thread update.

Let me know if there are any problems on any of the forums.

Me again! Image

Finally got the chance to try a post to an older thread again - still gives me the same error about disk space or whatever - I was getting those errors a while back when I changed the name of my forum - Tony did something and then I had no problems again. I thought what he did was index them - but maybe there is something else to it. The problem seems to have returned when the last upgrade took place...

Oh well. I'll continue to copy and paste if necessary - but it used to be nice to revive old threads when they applied...

I don't mean to sound like a complainer! I appreciate all the work you and all the volunteers do for the forums...

Hi Lori,

I'm sorry it didn't work. A guess would be that there is some sort of incompatability with the older posts created under a different version than what we are currently using. We can read 'em, we just can't add to 'em.

Scott,

Post a message on the support forms for the ubb:

http://www.scriptkeeper.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

I would put a message iwth the sypmtoms in the Post installation forum. If you have reindexed and rebuilt the threads, there is no reason for them not to be written too unless a couple directories got boched during harry's move to the new isp. I can check that out in the meantime as I can still get into the unix shell (don't have a forum password anymore).

I posted a message on the bug report forum. ONly because they are covering 5.46. However, after glancing at their problems with 5.46, I suggest we stick with what we know is working for now.

I set the post to email me when someone replys. Hopefully we'll have a fix soon.

Thanks Tony!

BTW: I posted about the problem on the UBB and this is what I rec'd...

The UBB throws this error when for some reason it can't open up the file for writing because the OS reports that the can not be created. This is usually the case with certain file quotas, but can occur in other situations. I've gotten the error a few times when I was editing a post in a thread which had been deleted by someone else while I was typing my edit.
Try submitting General Settings w/ the recount checkbox selected, then running an Update Threads

You might want to open a support ticket for this one, as Infopop will probably need to examine your board in detail. Select the last item (UBB Malfunctions) from the dropdown list and hit Go.

If the problem comes back, I'll try this.

Tony - How about being "C0-Administrator"? I'll handle everything that I can (I am learning a lot pretty quickly) and when I or George get stuck, you can, if you want of course, step in and help out.

I'm sure George wouldn't mind if we gave you back the Admin status. 3 Admins, 3's a charm.

Dude,

I'm only kidding. I think things are rolling smoothly for the most part. No system crashes or anything. But I hope you don't mind if I ask you something as a last resort. I was ready to make those changes you suggested. Hadn't realized till the end of one of your posts you did it already.

Hey I'm not kidding! Scott - you are doing a great job - and with as much as Tony knows effortlessly about the net and UBB and stuff - he should be a paid consultant for the UBB themselves! And you and that video editing with the music - you are outSTANDING! Some big time tech firm somewhere is just waiting for you guys...

uechi-ryu.com is seriously lucky to have you guys around.

Great talent is too often unappreciated! Especially by the users who don't realize how much goes on behind the scenes. Maybe someone should start a user awareness campaign or something... :P

Lori,

Always could count on you for what little praise there was in this job! Some folks even go so far as to address you as if you where a janitor believe it or not!

Scott,

Please don't beg man... I just don't have time right now. I have a new job and it's very intense at times and I just don't have time (or energy) to get involved. You're doing great man and I for one appreciate it and I know George does.

The problem was that the permissions for all the old files where only "execute" for users. I changed them so that all could read and write but not exectue (chmod 666). I have no idea how it got that way but if this happens again, that is the first thing you'll want to look at.

Thanks Lori,

Now I'm blushing... yeah... gee thanks! Image

In truth, I do this because I feel I'm giving back. When I found this site back in the day, I started practicing at home. Then I started asking questions, and it pumped my interest all over again.

Imagine what your training and outlook on Uechi ryu would be like if this site didn't exist. Especially the people that have been coming here for a while. This place is an experience. Very interactive. So many other sites just sit there stagnant till they rot. One site's "what's new" was new in 1996. That site finally came down recently.

Uechi-ryu.com always changes. It's always updated. Always something new. Always informative.

If anybody really deserves any thanks (and praise) it's George E. Mattson. He started it all, runs it, maintains it, etc... on top of ALL else he has to do within the Uechi community (and martial art community at large).... Seminars, camps, tournaments, IUKF business, testing, traveling, etc, etc, etc... And on top of all that (of what we think we may know what else he does) he still has to put up with politics, take care of his own personal life, and sometimes deal with the few boneheads that pass their way through these forum doors.

The man deserves a standing ovation.

So you see, I don't mind sweeping the eDojo floors every so often.

Scott
