I train with a few women that are in their 40's and 50's. They started about the same time as I did (5-6 years ago). They train and practice hard and have a lot of fun in the process. Can I hear other's input on some of their older students? What makes it work well for them?

Dear BB:
It works well because it is a passion for me. I truly enjoy training, the challenges, the "ahas" that come with repetition and the fellowship of being with kindred spirits. Our group ranges from ages 16 - 65 -- mostly 35-48 years old.
It's not age ... it's an attitude!

I think the "Aha's" are the best part. I assist in teaching the beginners, they feel awkward, nervous and unsure but we have fun building on each skill to a certain comfort level and then when a technique comes together and really works they are very pleased with themselves and often surprised to see a technique really works. There is the fellowship that each wants to see the other succeed without the emphasis on "who is better".
We do a lot of partner work, and switch partners (working both with the guys and women) often so they can see how they need to adapt. But it is great to see their confidence building
I do insist they work hard at it, feel where they have to shift their weight, adjust their stance, change their hold and if the technique is not working figure out what has to be different to make it work. So not only do they have the physical conditioning there is the mental conditioning to constantly think and problem solve. The work-outs create many challenges.
We have a lot of husbands and wives that come together and we often break down the techniques while they work with different partners. We probably have more laughs and fun when these couples finally get to try these techniques on each other.....especially the take downs!
