They always say there is safety in numbers...but I suppose that is more true if those numbers happen to be something like a Judo team:

It'll be interesting to see if any lawsuits come out of this though...after all, this little story makes it sound like the team gang-attacked the carjacker. Depending on the details a lawyer could potentially turn it around into where they are seen as not acting in self-defense.

Theres a better article on www.latimes.com but you have to register to enter it.
It was a mix of guys and girls I heard.
As a Judoka I figure they all practiced their throws on him and then took turns holding him down.
At least he got a free lesson!!
But who taught those guys atemi?

Yesterday morning I heard an interview with one of the ladies on the team. She said the guys on the team were just punching the carjacker. She said she was behind the carjacker and wanted to put him in a choke hold, but was afraid she'd accidentally get punched in the face by her teammates if she did (a very real possibility in a wild melee). Other than eventually holding him down, it didn't sound like many judo techniques were used.

They interviewed the group on The Today Show this morning. The would-be carjacker sounded like a complete moron.
The first to interact with the jarjacker was the judo coach. He put the fellow in a neck restraint. He subsequently let the guy go. So what does he do? After leaving the group, he then elects to return and enter the van. He gets in and turns the ignition on. The female involved apparently just turned the engine off and took the keys out. From that point it isn't clear who did what. But the judo instructor claims that by the time the police arrived (in force with about 10 cars and a helicopter), they had him "stretched out like a pretzel." I'm thinking that each person probably grabbed whatever appendage they could find, and started cranking on that joint. A little elbow hyperextension here, a little ankle lock there...
It sound like just a light workout for the group. They were pretty lighthearted about the whole thing. They showed a video of the would-be hyjacker after the incident. He looked very, very worked over, and in tears.
Poor Tyrone...

Ask 10 different people who were there and you'd get 10 different stories.
Nice to hear about a martial art coming out on top.
If he was pinned on the ground, he got thrown somehow.
I liked LAPD Sgt. Alan Hamiltons quote
"Judo team 1; carjacker, 0,"

He is being held for 1.2 million dollar bail so maybe there's more to this guy than the press is letting on.

I had a feeling I wouldn't be the only one to come up with that tag line!

Sounds like he had been watching "Clockwork Orange".
Hopefully he'll get the same fate.

The carjacker pushed the woman out of the car after trying to steal her purse, police said.

Let's see now, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, robbery...
And THEN he approached the judo team and tried to carjack THEIR van...
I'd say he was on a roll, but then got a bit tied up...

Perhaps you didn't read the whole story. Here's how he started his day...
quote:
In that incident, police said, the carjacker punched the Nissan's driver and pulled him out of the car then drove away with the female passenger. He is being held for 1.2 million dollar bail so maybe there's more to this guy than the press is letting on.

I heard today that one guy had him in a naked choke, and both his arms were in a cross arm bar on either side when the police arrived.
Can't confirm it, but thought I'd share it anyway.
If I were them I would be quiet about what I did also.
